I got a callon saturday morning from hmrc saying i owed 1750 pounds and i was going to be arrested and my passport and bank account would be frozen and it would be put in the paper and sent to jail.
I ended up puting the phone down and ringing my accountant to verify the amount i owed.
It was very convincing with the caller giving me his badge number and my case number.
Just be on your toes out there guys and dont give any personal details out as hmrc will write to you first.

By convincing I expect you mean not at all convincing to anyone under 50.
HMRC won't phone you unexpectedly, and they certainly won't be expecting you to make payments without a written payment demand, or via their online portal.

In all honesty, the over 50s would probably have more idea how HMRC operates than the younger part of our population.

BTW OP, “I got a callon saturday morning from hmrc saying.....”

No, you didn’t.

I had a missed call on my mobile on Friday, that started with 0300..........

A quick Google of the number revealed that it had been reported as a scam number, claiming to be part of a supposed HMRC tax fraud case.

My first thought was: "Sssyeah right!....And HMRC got my mobile number from where exactly?"

Not from HMRC no, but I have no doubt they did get a call *claiming* to be from HMRC, because my wife got such a call on Saturday too...

Hi

I got the same call on Friday . Telling me I owed £1800. I had a few mins spare so decided to string them along for as long as poss to keep them away from more vulnerable people. Kept it going for 7 mins. smile

Told him to hold whilst I sorted out the dog who needed feeding. Then told him I wasn’t a british citizen. Also that all my money was in Bermuda. Each time he said the police were on their way and I would be arrested. He finally put the phone down after he asked me for the 5th time did I want to go to prison and I answered “Well I could do with some peace and quiet, would I get the top bunk?” He hung up smile

Hey, don't diss us over 50s, we don't all think HMRC would call us and demand money, neither do we all believe Microsoft have found a problem with our PC, nor that a guy with the same surname has died and they need help to get a squillion pounds out of nigeria

It won't have been at all convincing to anyone with half an ounce of common sense.

You say that, and it's easy to laugh, but they hope to land on older people who get into a panic when told it's HMRC, or the other favourite, BT, and they owe money.

My FIL, who is in 90s but still one of the last people you would think would get caught by something like this, fell for the BT one. He realised as soon as he put the phone down but thankfully they'd tried to take so much from his bank that it triggered a fraud check. But he felt so stupid he attempted to take his own life.

And stuff like this might not come completely out of the blue - a couple of years ago he got a letter from HMRC saying he owed £5K. A complete fk-up by them, which we sorted out.

HMRC - Badge no. I don’t think so. Perhaps he was getting confused with the IRS.

I might have had this call on Saturday too.

It was an 0300 number ,thought it was my energy company to persuade me to have smart meter fitted ,so I ignored it.

Lucky escape huh .

I had a call from BT two weeks ago saying that my internet account was compromised and would be terminated within days.

Nothing changed, I'm still here. wavey

Regarding the HMRC not phoning unexpectedly I got a call on a Sunday morning (genuine by the way) although they weren’t expecting me to transfer money.

The guy on the end of the phone said they sometimes had to phone at odd hours just to be able to catch people at home.

We had that call three or four time about April time. Nothing since.
