Received the obligatory ticket post Le Mans, do we still just bin these or pay them to avoid future trouble?

Pay, or they can chase through courts over here.

I paid mine as I am in France regularly in the same car and don’t need the hassle.

How do they go about doing that? It seems unlikely a County Court would give judgement against a speculative French speeding allegation.

UK Magistrates Courts have no jurisdiction in respect of french law.

An International Arrest Warrant - really?

My understanding is, and I'm prepared to be wrong, that the EU country's fine (if unpaid) can be chased by the criminal courts in the UK, as if it were a fine issued by UK courts, and the UK courts have the same powers to order payment or other sanctions, as they would a locally issued fine. Such is the relationship with the EU, these days.

I don't think that is correct. A UK court may only chase an amount of money owed if the amount has been awarded by a UK court, at which point bailiffs may attend to collect if not paid. Since an offence has not resulted in a 'guilty' verdict in a UK court no fine can be awarded. Under UK law a 'fine' is only a 'fine' when an order has been made by a UK court. The French (or other foreign authority) will not have laid the evidence before a UK court for a UK summons to be issued and a 'fine' to be issued if a guilty verdict results..
UK Magistrates Courts don't seem to have been asked, even if it is possible, to make judgement on an alleged foreign offence. Is this possible? I don't know, but it seems as though no-one has been pursued in this way (yet). It would be very complicated as all proceedings in a UK court must be in English (or maybe Welsh!). The need for the French to issue a request for proceedings with all evidence translated into English would probably be a step too far for them.

How do you know it’s specualtive? Maybe the ticket has been issued after a speed trap, say 30kph over the limit, and been processed in accordance with the procedures outlined by other posters. What’s speculative about that?

I had a couple of French tickets. I paid up as I don't need the grief when I go over, I know of someone that received 7 from one trip. He binned them all. I'm not sure that is the best way to go about dealing with that problem.
OP how fast were you going then?? one of mine was 91kph in a 90kph zone, this was after the police reduced it down by a few per cent.

Sounds like coughing up might be the easiest thing, it's not the end of the world @ Eu 45. Was doing 138 in a 130 which surprised me - thought it might be more than that!

For 7 it might be worth their while to enforce them here.

I am in France right now, and am a bit confused about the situation with speeding currently. We visited for 10 days 2 yrs ago and I didn't know what to look for camera-wise, and must have set off at least 15 without realising. Didn't know then that they always follow the radar sign. Definitely got flashed by a forward facing one on a peripherique too. Recieved nothing in the post at all.

I believe the situation has changed now, and given this thread, it seems the French authorities pursue foreign motorists for speeding offences, when they didn't before. I dread the thought of ticket after ticket coming through in the post when we return home.

So, I need to be more vigilant this time!

Any tips please? I know what to look for with the forward facing cameras on the peripheriques, but less sure how soon after the radar sign the detector is on other roads. What to look for?

Also, I saw a sign yesterday that says 'radar automatique 22kms' - does that mean there's a detection point in 22kms? Or average speed over 22kms?

Any other pointers appreciated - I feel like a sitting duck at the moment!

If you are that worried don't speed or just pay the bill when you get home

In the last 3 or so years i have done quite a bit of driving in france and i normally drive to the conditions so at times i can be quite a bit over the posted limit, i have yet to have recieved a ticket on a mix of auto route and D road driving.

One thing i have done in the past is latch on to the back of a fast moving local ,i have also come across locals warning you of mobile speed traps

Le flicks like to set up on the entrance and exit of villages and towns ,also they are likely to be around any large events in a area you are visiting( le man etc )

As for camera warnings on auto routes just stick to 80mph until your past the camera i have found them easy to spot and they do put up massive signs to let you know when you are approaching one.

To answer your question:

"Also, I saw a sign yesterday that says 'radar automatique 22kms' - does that mean there's a detection point in 22kms? Or average speed over 22kms?"

It normally means that there will be one or more cameras or traps somewhere in the next 22 KMs. The latest radars are moveable so won't always be in the same place.

Second the comment about Waze, the French are pretty good in giving up-to-date info on camera placements and traps.
