Had my car media system update at annual service and lost the Tom Tom speed camera alerts. Enquired with customer service about it and they said it’s now illegal under EU law. Is this correct or are they trying to fog me off?

They're illegal in France but as far as I'm aware they're still fully legal in the UK and most other places in Europe...

Seems like cobblers to me given that their own website advertises alerts...

Your TomTom has lied to you - nothing in European law to ban them but it's a handy thing to blame stuff on these days.

I imagine that because they are illegal in France TomTom (or youe media partner) have just lazily removed them from all European updates.

It's also unlikely to be the kind of thing made EU law - more likely to be a directive and codified in local law.

Only illegal in France IIRC.

The point about it being easier for them to just remove it from all EU updates is more likely - to prevent a French user from downloading and using in France.

Google have only just introduced this on their "maps" app so I doubt very much that there's anything illegal about it.

Indeed, but to be honest, they are a bit hit and miss, as i recently discovered.

FFS this is complete nonsense if it’s true. Pity we don’t have a huge government body that can punish companies like this.

has the car just passed an anniversary? were you connected to the internet? perhaps you are now out of contract/licence for TomTom alerts.
Speaking as a Toyota driver, but perhaps your manufacturer is similar, with a new, satnav-equipped Toyota you get 3 years of free updates & what they call "connected services" which includes realtime traffic alerts supplied by Tomtom via internet . Once you go over that 3rd year you need to pay a subscription to keep those "connected services" live though.

Google recently started charging for some services e.g. Streetview that previously were supplied free which lead to their loss from the head unit.

Definitely only illegal in France, where all other forms of speed camera detection devices have also been illegal for decades. Vous must not deny les Flics the pleasure of busting you for driving trop vite wink

The French have a way around it though. Waze simply warns of danger zones or speed monitoring zones instead of actual radar traps.

The main issue now in France is not fixed cameras but unmarked camera cars.

Impossible to detect.

They have front and rear cameras.

TomTom are the CD of the sat nav industry old, out dated and pointless

Google spends more a week on mapping than TomTom make a year lol, every penny in revenue TT have earned wouldn't cover the cost of googles AI infrastructure

They certainly seem to have fallen into the nokia trap and don't move with the market.

They should release a free app like waze and strap competing.

I have found routing so much more reliable on a TomTom device than using Waze, it should be the other way but the traffic avoidance on Waze seems a little behind TomTom.

No, I have another year left of the subscription. I guess a great way for them to save money.

That is my experience too. The speed camera next to where "Mole Valley TVR" used to be does not ping up. It was recently changed to the other side of the road and moved a short distance.
