French ticket - Civil or criminal?

Haven't read it all fully (because I'm not particularly concerned about it) but my understanding is that the forwarded ticket is for a hearing/case in France & any conviction is in France, but the legislation allows for any subsequent fine to be recovered in the UK as if the fine had been imposed by a UK court should they wish to go that route.but if you get a ticket forwarded to you in uk, is it enforceable by the uk courts as a criminal offence? Anyone Comment on how the courts treat unpaid fines for speeding (criminal) versus a fine for a civil matter? i have no clue having not received any for numerous years..
As i suspect the course of action taken by the courts for a non paid fine over a civil matter will be exactly the same method used for the french criminal infringement that gets transfered to uk.

I apologise, I thought it was another of those "I've been done for speeding abroad can I ignore it" threads.
My wife and I have had three tickets sent to our uk address for a U.K. registered car this year and they usually send you a polite letter in English and French asking to pay. We've not had them before this year so something must've changed.
As we spend so much time in France we both have the App on our phones to make paying it easier as the tolerance for speeding is fairly small and the police like to hide at the side of the motorways, I think the last ticket was 134kph in 130, so it's likely we'll get caught out occasionally. We don't get points and there's been no threat of criminal charges but we've never let it escalate as it's so cheap we see as just another road toll.
