One of the Basingstoke bridges is the only one I've seen a van on - and even that was a rare sight.
The M27 used to be a totally camera van free zone, but a little while back they started setting up on assorted bridges from Whiteley to Ower.
The previous Chief Constable of Hampshire reportedly claimed the motorways were the safest roads in his area and he didn't want to see camera enforcement being used.

Was on the A303 and M3 for the first time in years last weekend.
cheeky little sunts had set up their scameravan on the top of a bridge, round a bend, 1/2 mile after a long set of roadworks (cones only) on a three lane section which had taken about 45 minutes to do about 5 miles.
The absolutely perfect location to ping anyone who had reached the end of the roadworks, the end of the jam and wished to clear the cobwebs. Pure, unadulterated opportunism. Was rather glad i was in my asthmatic ant of a pug or else i could have had a squeaky bum moment instead of one considering if flipping the bird to scamera vans could actually ever lead to problems.

This also applies to roads immediately ahead of known congestion spots. You know the scenario long queues at say a series of round-abouts followed by miles of unrestricted empty dual-carriageway.

I always roll through the camera zone at 81 on the speedo (unless there are restrictions in place). I’ve never been flashed, but have seen people get pinged at around 84 / 85.schmalex said:

When I attended a speed awareness course one of the attendees had been pinged at 81. Luck of the draw depending on location I thinkmhurley said:

It’s Safety Camera Partnerships which are now in most cases run by Local Authorities ( and make a tidy profit)
The Police manage the prosecution for them but they are NOT the Police

Can honestly say in 20 odd years of using the whole length of the M3, I've never seen a camera van parked up on a bridge. Seen the odd car but not sure that was for speeding. They must make a killing at the right time of day.
What time of day do you travel then? I commute from London to Southampton. Shift work so usually miss rush hour but regularly seen cameras on the bridges where it is 2 lanes. Hard to see with trees overgrown and a slight bend but I just go through that section at no more than 80 on speedo as that’s 77 gps.
Night time can bomb through the non smart section over a ton with ease although I have heard night speed cameras could be used soon.
