I got scammed by a scammer last night, although only O2 will actually lose out but they don't seem to care. Got a call from the "fraud team" at O2 from a withheld number, said there'd been loads of suspicious activity on accounts and needed to verify that I was the account holder and still had my device, if they couldn't they would restrict my account and I'd have to go into an O2 store to verify. To do this they would text me a 6 digit code. Despite all my spidey senses going off I read it back to them. Boom! They were in to my account using my mobile number and a single use verification code. They called me just as O2 customer services closed so of course I couldn't cancel the order that they placed for an upgrade to a brand new £1400 iPhone.

Called my bank to check no money was going to be taken, they offered to verify me by sending me a 6 digit single use code. I declined and answered my security questions! biggrin

Called O2 this morning as soon as they opened to get them to cancel the order, lady on the phone said all she could do was pass it to the fraud team and they would get back to me withing 3-5 working days but watch out as the call may be from a withheld number! Said don't worry about the phone, O2 are insured against it!! Seems daft she couldn't cancel the order before it leaves their warehouse but that's their bag.

Anyhoo, looking back of course I was stupid but we all do stupid things every now and then. (just a shame I work in telecoms and spend plenty of my day protecting folk against this, bit of an own goal!!) biggrin

So, anyone want the address that a dirty scammer is getting a new iPhone XS Max 256GB Space Grey delivered to? Apologies if you live here but Reid House on Bampton Road, SE23 2BJ in London looks like the exact place a dirty scammer would live!

1) they could cancel the order, but they cant be arsed as they would have to confirm it was not genuine.

2) Sadly I am not convinced by the "don't worry we are insured stuff" she said. I think you will have a bit of a battle on your hands to get the amount credited back to your account.

3). Report to Action Fraud.
Good luck

No money has been taken from my account, they just signed a new credit agreement and used my existing direct debit details. I agree though, O2 will probably let the payments start coming out and I'll have to battle to get it cancelled.

Yup, action fraud report happening now.

Surely you have the order number etc and will get delivery information? Just contact the courier and change the delivery address. Think O2 use DPD

Yup, been in touch with DHL to try and get the parcel cancelled/diverted so I can send it back.

I don't really want a new phone but it's not the end of the world if I end up with it!!

Yeah I'm not too worried that I'm going to end up out of pocket and O2 will be able to cancel the contract/upgrade. It just bothers me that a scammer is potentially about to get a delivery of a brand new fancy iPhone.

Hopefully O2 can cancel the delivery. Hopefully DHL can redirect the delivery/cancel it. Hopefully the contract/upgrade gets cancelled.

I'm sure at least some of it might happen.

Exactly! I'd quite like the phone the guy has ordered for me, I just couldn't justify the outlay.

Still, he lives in a sthole so if a shiny phone relieves that then fair play.

O2 fraud team have sorted it all. Phone returned, tariff reverted to normal, passwords all changed to the My O2 account.

Sit back and watch that for a few weeks and see what my next monthly payment ends up being. But, thumbs up to O2 in the end. Held out very little hope after speaking to the first customer services agent.

Shouldn't really affect you, you are in the 14 day (or whatever it is) cooling off period if you changed your mind anyway so the same standards as for that can easily be applied.

Having spoken to Vodafone recently I noticed that their verification text includes a note that they will never call you to ask for the code. Obviously for this reason!

It's also extremely easy to send an SMS message that appears to come through from the same number that you receive your bank's 2FA codes. So ignore any requests that come through like that too.

The company can block the phone, presumably they have the IMEI number.
