Fault with car in last week of warranty
Discussion
I have a 2 year and 364 day old BMW. I'm also on holiday and not near a BMW dealer.
Within the last few days, the iDrive screen has developed about a 12x16mm area of dead pixels. Nothing shows up in that dead pixel area. It's mildly annoying at best/worst.
As the warranty is about to expire, I've called my local dealer, who have told me it probably won't be covered by warranty unless I bring the car to them by the end of the warranty period.
I've emailed BMW UK describing the fault. They can't say they can't say if it will be covered by the warranty unless I take it to a BMW dealer today (since today is the last day of the warranty period).
This sounds like pants. As I've informed them of the fault in writing, within the warranty period and I'm about to send BMW a photo of the screen with dead pixels, also still within the warranty period, they cannot wiggle out of it, right?

^ No - as far as I'm concerned this is a new car warranty repair, end of. But even if I did that, the extended warranty isn't actually a warranty, its an insurance policy against repairs. Once you make a claim by having a repair done, you cannot cancel to get a refund on the unused portion of the policy.
Surely, it doesnt have to be your local dealer, and unless you are on Skye, there has to be one close enough to be worth a few hours of your time. It's just to register the fault within the warranty timeframe, you dont have to take it back to deepest darkest Somerset to have the work done, do you?
Surely to goodness the fact that you've reported it - and I would send them an email confirming your report - then they should honour the warranty. It's not as if they'd take in in today to fix it - they'd probably book you in next week oor the week after.
The turbo blew on my Saab 2 weeks after the warranty expired. Saab still replaced it under warranty - perhaps because they were hoping I'd order a new car (which I did because they had honoured the warranty)
But my son has had similar experience from BMW - they just can't seem to fix faults first, second, third or fourth time. His car is now ot of warranty but because he reported the fault originally at 9 months, they have to honour the warranty.
I had similar experience with Volvo - my window winder conked out 1 month after warranty but because I'd reported the same fault at 3 days old, 6 months old, 12 months, 18 months, 22 months they had no option but to honour the warranty.
If BMW are being that strict, I know who wouldn't buy another car from!

About 60 miles return, in addition to having to cancel the days activities.
Life sucks sometimes.I would be heading to the nearest dealer to have it looked at.
I also suspect that a new part would need to be ordered, which could be sent to your dealer nearer home.
Not really worth the fight with BMW IMO.

Just book in, surely it's from book in the warranty would be honoured not from the date of inspection.I have found BMW to be very good when it comes to the warranty so would hope they resolved it.

I appreciate you're on holiday, but a bit of a drive and cancelling what you were going to do for the day is no different to any other time most people drop their car off for repair work... if you want it fixing under warranty then do it, if you don't want to drive 60 miles and cancel a day's activities then don't get the repair done under warranty, simply a question of which is more important to you.NotBenny said:

It is not comparable. I do not book other non-urgent repair work for later in the same afternoon, when I’m on holiday and have made other plans. Particularly when I have described the fault to the repairer in detail, with photos and even a layman could infer it is not something that can be fixed on the spot so taking it to a different dealer to the one performing the repair is pointless. Did you read any of the thread?
Sure did but including photo of fault provides evidende of fault and that it exists today, from my experiencewith BMW they would have to be very bolshy not to accept the fault existed.whilst the car was still under warranty- maybe our experience of BMW warranty leads you to believe otherwise^ I think (hope) it is a case of BMW UK never going to come right out and say that 'yes, this is covered by warranty' unless it has been into a dealer. But in this case almost certainly covering it anyway. At least I hope so, as I've now made iron-clad documentation of the fault to BMW UK and the local dealer both by email and I could really do without a trip to the county court if they are bolshy.

I can't imagine any BMW dealer is going to take a look at it straight away today. I'd just book it in at your local dealer for as soon as it is convenient. If it's booked in to be looked at before the end of the warranty I can't see they have a leg to stand on.
Agree. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they try and wriggle out of it but the fact you've comprehensively logged the fault and have it booked in for diagnosis would mean you're covered in my book. As if you can just ring BMW and get a fault looked at on the same day anyway, there is always a few days wait, at least! I reckon you'll get it sorted anyway.
And enjoy the rest of your holiday! b
ks to messing about with ruining that as some suggest is entirely justified...FFS.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
