Just heard on the news that there's now a 'hedge' fine to add to the list.
Can anyone remember any of the others, or where on the web you can find them?
I'm sure there's a government department whos job it is to find things to fine people for.
Fine fine fine.............

There have been moves during the past few years to legislate about tall hedges (Leylandii etc.) following some well publicised and acrimonious disputes between neighbours. I expect that could be what you've heard, but I didn't know this law was taking effect quite so soon, apparently it becomes effective today.

I shall have to find out what the law now says, as we may have a bit of a problem at the TripleS abode.

You're right though, one does get the impression there is an ever expanding army of pillocks dreaming up new ways to tax us, fine us and generally be a pain in the ass, often for no good reason.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Plus I think that if you have a hedge problem, first of all one has to cough up ~£300 to pay the council to investigate it.

maybe the fine kicks in if the offene is proven, then again maybe it kicks in against the complainant if not proven. Who knows, nothing would surprise me these days.

I herd that it had been written into anti social behaviour legislation.
Such as if the hedge is found to fall foul then they get an order to remove the hedge, if they dont then i assume an asbo may come into force meaning if they have a hedge over xx feet tall they are in breach and get nicked.

All the above is something i herd on the grapevine not necessary right!

Re your problem go to

Scroll down to part 8 which outlines the law and the complaint procedure.

As fif points out there is a high cost to lodge a complaint with LA (up here 300 quid plus). Howver if you have not tried to settle the matter with your neighbour ona one to one basis they will not entertain you.

Many thanks for that DVD. I will follow that up. In our case the tall trees are ours, so the complaint, if any, would be directed at us. I'll try offering a concise explanation of the situation later.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

The trouble is, it's a reflection on our society (or lack of it). The more people there are who don't see why THEY should obey the norms of common decency and respect for others and their property, the more legislation is needed to "keep them in order".

What we're ending up with is a set of laws designed to keep the "animals" in our society in order which impinge on the rights of decent people also.

Sometimes I think a bullet would be quicker and cheaper.

The "Law of Unintended Consequences" - that actions, especially of government, always have effects that are unanticipated or unintended.

Of course, the more paranoid will argue that the so-called "unintended consquences" were intended all along. The most paranoid will put forward arguments that these are the raison d'etre.

paranoid adj.

1 So why do YOU want to know?
