What does this actually mean?

If I’m a police constable and I’ve booked two weeks in Benidorm can I go next week?

If I’m a superintendent and I’m in Cornwall with the family do I have to come back?

It’s often quoted but I just wonder what it actually means.

Thanks

Have you not asked any superior officers or your Union rep, if not I would , quickly if there's something you are not telling us about to happen. smile

In the early 80's it meant you would spend a lot of time in a transit van but your mortgage would be paid off very quickly

In the 70's it was much the same for the "other side "in transits with balaclavas and bulky hold all's

Nowadays it means working upto two weeks+ solid and any rest days are given back as rest days in leui.

Not so bad if your normal job is office work. The cancelled days are usually set at 12hours.

What a stupid comment; there'd be hardly anything for us to read if everyone did that! You'll be suggesting that people use the search function next, or glance back over the last two or three pages of S,P &L to find out what happens if you're caught at 35mph in a 30 limit. biggrin

It usually means that no further leave can be booked. If you already have leave booked and are going somewhere. Crack on.

And the 90's. I can vouch for that. Some days I was earning more than the Inspector. ( who didn't get overtime). Not that we let him know. Oh No!

I'd left the service by then biggrin

There is a big difference between ....

Rest day Leave and Annual Leave

Rest day leave can be and often is cancelled under Police Regulations

The lost day must be compensated with either a day back or payment depending on the notice period

When the “media” talk about all Police Leave being cancelled it s rest day Leave they are talking about

Annual Leave is very different and is hardly if ever cancelled

There are minimum staffing levels and maximum abstraction rates

If your Annual Leave is approved and you are on the beach in Benidorm you do not have to come back

They will put restrictions on people taking AL such as around the NHC or NYE but there has never been a blanket block

However saying that I did once get recalled from Annual Leave whilst on holiday abroad

It was a right Saga and created quite a bit of a stink as my AL was booked prior to a Court date and my evidence was agreed ( ie it could be read and I didn’t need to be cross examined ) prior to the date being set

The trial Judge then decided HE wanted me there in person even though the Prosecution and defence didn’t

The upshot was I had to make my way to the Airport and present my to BA who would have a travel warrant for me .. I flew back to Heathrow where I was met by a colleague and driven to Snaresbrook C C who then waited whilst I gave my evidence which consisted of both the Prosecution and defence asking me NO questions .. the Trial Judge asked me if knew the caution and whether I’d given it ... that was it !

I think he was just being bloody minded tbf

I then got back in the car and was taken back to Heathrow where I flew back to resume my holiday

The cost of it must have been horrific I got paid about £1k plus got double my AL Leave back

Totally pointless and bizarre !

But in effect AL is Never cancelled for Operational Stuff

My father was an inspector, happened several times while we were on holiday.

Remember returning to a caravan site one evening having been out for a walk to be met by police dog handler who had been sent out to "ask" him to ring the office - we reeturned home the following morning. I don't know what compensation was paid.

The dog was a German Shepherd with a huge head called Satan, very good natured but the handler said his demeanor changed significantly when "going to work".

A Saga holiday ? I didn't think you were that old smile

I've often found that the water doesn't agree with me abroad.

It can make me very ill.

Two words.

Sick.

Note. wink

This bloody phone writes what it wants not what I type at times

I tried all sorts to get out of it but when the Judge threatened a warrant for my arrest I gave up smile
I learnt a lesson.. for every holiday since I wrote “touring no accommodation details” as destination

That and only answering the phone to
Known numbers smile

When they issued a work mobile I deleted my personal one/house phone from the personnel record .. then left the work phone in my locker when I went home

laugh

From memory for major events you are not allowed to book leave in the first place. When the G5 Summit was held at Gleneagles in 2005 nobody was allowed to book holidays during that week. Same for the NATO conference at Turnberry a few years earlier.
