Police/insurance regarding an alleged accident

So received a letter from the police to say I was involved in an accident and ripped off the front end of a car and wing mirror and driven off in our Luton van
Person has taken a picture of my van driving in front of him
Now I know for a fact I haven’t hit this vehicle police have said they only want details for this other guys insurance and it’s in their hands but apart from telling the police I haven’t and it’s very easy to take pictures of cars and say they’ve hit you what can I actually do? Police said insurance will go knock for knock BUT I still haven’t been involved in anything and there’s no evidence or video evidence to state otherwise

If it is as you say, then I'd be off down to the nick from where this letter came from, making an allegation of fraud by this person, and hinting strongly out that the Police appear to be assisting the alleged fraud.
Indeed; a suggestion that there may be a smell of PCJ usually focuses their minds.Were you actually in the area at the time of alleged accident?
I'd be straight down to the station showing no damage / scratches on my van, and proof of whereabouts if different area. To rip front end off a car would leave damage!

My brother was involved in a similar incident a few years back.
Long story short they refused to look at his car (6 months old and not a scratch on it) yet tried to pursue him for driving offences. A "no comment" interview put a stop to that as there was zero evidence.
The "victim" then tried to claim on my brother's insurance. The insurance company sent an assessor out to look at my brother's car and then told the claimant to do one.
Yeah I’m from Wakefield and this was in Nottingham, I was in Nottingham in traffic and this guy has apparently taken a picture of the back of my Luton in traffic then said we’ve taken his whole front end off,
Not easy to just drive over an hour there then same back!
Told the officer I haven’t been involved in the accident and it sounded like he was trying it on! Anyway my employer have sent my details to the police so will see what happens but the officer said there is no evidence just the fact this guy has said it!

This happened to my Dad 20-idd years ago.
Two very arsey coppers turned up. They spotted his car had a cracked light lense and decided that was proof. Fortunately the car had just been serviced by Volvo and the cracked light was noted on the body condition report along with a note that the new light was on order.
The alleged victim got our number and called up shouting the odds that his car had been "written off". He also mentioned that he was a firefighter and that we'd have to be careful as his wife was a solicitor.
My old man reported it to the police as fraud and suggested the force was assisting the fraud.
He heard nothing more.
The fire service were contacted by him and told that there was a fraud complaint against an employee. This was on the basis that he brought them into the situation unnecessarily and that it might involve them indirectly at a later date.
The solicitor wife was easily traced and I think she was given suitable advice by a senior partner regarding hubby using her name and by association theirs to threaten people.
What really made my Dad angry was that he was such an honest bloke. If he had damaged someone's car he'd have left a note and paid up promptly.

Lovely scenery in the summer, a b
h in the winter....everything was country lanes so no gritters to get you out of trouble.Anyhow, he was delivering to a shop in one of these villages with snow everywhere. The village was approachable from the South because it was flat but to get out of it you needed to traverse a steep hill (lots of hills in the Cotswolds as you can imagine).
So, as he emerged from this shop he'd just delivered to, he saw this Range Rover come way too fast around the bend at the top of the hill, hit the grass verge (no pavements out there), flip onto it's side and slide majestically down the hill and stop just short of the village maypole.
Now my dad was very much "let's help anyone" (a generation thing which seems to have been lost today, sadly) and he was first over and helped the old guy out ("you alright me old mate, here come and sit in my van for a bit while you calm down").
Fast forward a week and he gets summoned into his Company's Transport Manager's office and is told that Gloucestershire Police want to know why he hasn't reported an accident that he was involved in.
Long story short, this guy fingered my dad as having caused him to swerve and crash (he'd picked up the fact that my dad was driving a signwritten vehicle and presumably thought an insurance payout would be easy pickings as it was a company rather than an individual).
Luckily, the shopkeeper (and three villagers) offered evidence as to what actually happened.
It turns out that this guy (who turned out to be a local GP FFS) had done the *exact* same thing the previous winter and I guess his insurance premiums would have gone through the roof if he'd had to declare that he was responsible for two write-offs within the space of twelve months.
The good bit? His insurance company pursued him for fraud and he went to prison for a year.
The bad bit? My dad never trusted a living soul again.
Oh, just for clarity, this was in the 1970s and the GP was very definitely English.
So being a c**t isn't a new thing.
