Red X's

Scenario:

Lanes 1 and 2 on a motorway have been red X'd. You haven't passed any cancellation signage.

Can you cross those lanes to take an exit? (assuming there are no cones/workmen/accidents etc., i.e. a clear normal motorway.)

My assumption is: legally = no, morally = why not.

If you reach the next overhead sign gantry and the red X is not displayed you can only assume it’s open again.

If it was still closed surely the red X would be displayed again ?

Nothing to do with speed

The red X might mean "You must not drive along this lane", in which case crossing it for an exit might be OK. Or it might mean "You must not enter this lane at all."

Red X's are no different to the lane being closed by cones or the police or by a crash barrier.

You can't take the exit as you are entering a lane which is closed.

Don’t proceed further in that lane. However, can you cross it to take an exit? In reality, if the exit is closed there’s likely to be someone at the bottom of it enforcing that closure, so if I didn’t see anyone I’d likely use the exit, crossing the closed lane to do so.

No idea if I’d be right or not though!

In reality I suspect a lot of people would take the exit , I got stuck on the M25 with 2 red X closed lanes and no one seemed to give a st until the got to the actual accident a cones , loads of people flying past !
