Speed cameras to be slashed
By Andy Veale

The number of fixed speed cameras on Surrey's streets is to be slashed by a quarter following a review of the county's roads.

For the first time, Surrey is to get its own Safety Camera Partnership a group which aims to help reduce road deaths in the county even further.

As part of the process of setting up the group, a review was ordered into the area's speed and traffic light cameras that have been in operation for the past 10 years.

The conclusion was to remove seven speed cameras and add another at Mickleham Bends in Dorking, reducing the county's total from 24 to 18.

The number of red light cameras at traffic light junctions is set to increase by one at a junction in Guildford taking the total number to 12.

It is hoped the deployment of the cameras and the work of the Safety Camera Partnership will continue to tackle road deaths.

Duncan Knox, head of the partnership, said: "We know that safety cameras are working to reduce the number of road traffic collisions but cameras will only be placed where there is a clear need for casualty reduction at locations with a continuing history of serious collisions.

"Cameras are not a universal remedy for casualty reduction and should instead be seen as only one part of the road safety toolbox consisting of a range of engineering and education measures."

Superintendent Sue Warren, of Surrey Police, added: "We believe that safety cameras and vehicle- activated warning signs at identified problem sites and junctions are another tool for tackling road safety. A safety camera partnership in Surrey would provide yet another opportunity for relevant agencies to work together in making Surrey's roads safer."

The scheme is being run by Surrey County Council, Surrey Police, Surrey Magistrates' Courts and the Highways Agency.

Over a three-year period, safety cameras in Surrey have achieved a 23 per cent reduction in collisions and have almost halved the number of collisions at sites where someone was killed or seriously injured.

The general public still can’t grasp the concept of ‘regression to the mean’, so the camera partnerships will continue to be seen winning the lost battle.

Yep, I've spotted a few in the last couple of weeks or so.

So they take down ones that are ineffective (getting no revenue) and bring in the sneaky cash generating vans.

At least the camera on the Mickleham bends has a high profile speed triggered warning sign.

How the hell can a camera reduce collisions?

As said above, they'll only remove a camera that hasn't been earning its keep. If a camera had some magic influence long after it's removed I'd be somewhat surprised (even though most of us know they have no positive safety effect whatsoever.)

Maybe they had 24 boxes and only 18 cameras?
