Driving back home this evening, I stopped at a red traffic signal. It's a four-way crossing but the opposing signal has a right filter from the outset, so there is oncoming traffic.

As I waited, I noted a cyclist making progress up the inside (I was turning right). The cyclist proceeded across the stop line and turned right, weaving between oncoming traffic.

My passenger commented in unfavourable terms at this.

My signals charged to green and i turned right, shortly catching up with the cyclist.

My passenger wound down the window and commented loudly that traffic signals applied to cyclists too.

He received a rude one-fingered gesture in reply.

I stopped the car a few yards further up and my passenger got out to remonstrate with the cyclist. He (my passenger) stood in the road and signaled the cyclist to halt.

I imagine the cyclist would have ignored the outstretched, vertical palm ... had it not been for the warrant card held in it!

It is at best unwise to ignore a senior police officer!

Threatened to charge him with furious cycling and a common law offence of outraging public decency. The cyclist looked extremely cowed.

Laugh? I nearly had to change my trousers!

Well done.

As an aside, do cyclists fall into the same category of other roads/users motorists, in that they have to stop when required by a constable in uniform?

Were you in uniform?

Exactly Volvo you beat me to it......

I was just going to ask Streaky to be careful lest we have another outburst of Plod bashing as Plod has exceeded his authority on stopping whilst not in uniform. How do I know not in uniform.......when does a S.O. wear one?

In the City they stop cyclists breaking traffic laws by using riders themselves

My brother witnessed a slightly more extreme comeupance two days ago. Two lanes one way upto a cross road. My brother in a 110 county plus trailer and mini digger in left lane, a disco in the right. They both approach the lights and pull to a halt a yellow becons. A cyclist at full nutter mode in between the two decides to run the lights.... ( obviously he's not twigged on the fact that he is totally inviable to anyone crossing the junction ahead as he's between two large vehicles)...anyway he magically appars onto the junction and connects at about 20mph with the Ford Ka does a good stuntman imprssion over the bonnect sideways and down the road. My brother guessed having seen the angles of the limbs approx 1 broken arm, a collorbone and possibly a leg.

He probebly won't do that again. I'm sure it will be all the car drivers fault though.

Now speaking as a cyclist, that is comeupance!

I want your mate (*in uniform of course*) strapped to the front of my car at all times. I cannot believe the number of cyclists I see cycling dangerously.

And as an aside, what's with weaving through the side of traffic stopped at lights, and then pulling across the front of a car that is going to pull away more quickly than the bike and slowing all the traffic down?!

Because all to often you get 'nutter drivers' cutting you up when you're cycling.

When I'm on the bike, I will block, annoy, and generally piss drivers off any way I can so that I may continue my journey in a danger-free and safe fashion. That doesn't mean wobbling violently into the middle of the road, it means that I'll be in the centre of the lane on a hump-back bridge, it means I'll be in the same position as a car on a minor roundabout, it means that the only way I can be knocked off my bike is if somebody deliberately drives into me.

That's going to happen sooner rather than later, by the sound of it.

seen last week in heavy traffic at London Bridge: a cyclist on a pursuit bike riding fast through traffic (a pursuit bike has no brakes and no gears - it is justfor going round oval banked tracks). What an utter moron!

Yes, because I'm better at cycling than the majority of drivers are at driving.

If I get hit by a car (3-4 times in 20 years), its going to hurt - so I cycle defensively. If that means I make somebody wait at a junction, while I pedal away, then tough shit.

Was your passenger on duty? Perhaps correct to stop the cyclist (altho personally I don't have a prob with cyclists skipping red lights) but to carry yer cards around when yer off duty is damn right wrong.
