Selling SORN car - have I got this right?

Missus is selling/has sold her car

Shes had an overlap of a couple of weeks whilst weighing up options and so SORN'd it last week before putting it on Autotrader tonight
SORN was necessary to transfer NCB to new car
Old car has MOT for the near future

The car is decent and she has agreed a sale fairly quickly - damn that we're too far from the PHer looking for a Mini Cooper S last night.......

What Im not sure is how best to handle the sale
Theyve agreed a price and the ad is perfectly clear about the SORN status

Does she need to tax it tomorrow to transfer ownership which is when theyve agreed collection or not?
Or can she just fill in the V5 and let the new owner worry about it?
If she taxes it for a day how much of a rebate will she get when she cancels it immediately afterwards?

The buyer doesnt seem to care about test driving it - bit odd - however I have a feeling hes a trader and if necessary I can take out 7 day cover to chauffeur him round the block

As far as I’m aware it’s not your problem. The new owner will need to tax it, as well as instating a new SORN unless they have something that exempts them from needing to.

It makes no difference to the new owner. Any tax you had on the car evaporates as soon as it changes hands, and they should tax or SORN it.

I don't think you need to tax it to sell it. Just do in online and not worry about all that paper nonsense.

Yup, although I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you you should have demanded to see proof that the new owner is insured to drive the vehicle away.

Yep, you can sell a SORNed car, no issue. The SORN will automatically expire once the new owner registers the car in their name.
The car will then be required to either be SORNed again or taxed - but this choice is the new owner's decision and responsibility.
