Dear PH, I have yet another insurance question.

I’m a named driver on my wife’s policy and both my daughters policies.

Whilst parked in my wife’s car (me in driving seat), a lady reversed into us. With the dash cam footage, it was a slam dunk. Took 3 months to resolve but car was fixed and excess paid out.

Now my first daughter has just over £50 taken from her card by her insurers as I have had a no fault claim and I’m a named driver on her policy.

Is that how it works ?

A non fault claim and all policies in on are effected ?

When was/is your daughter's policy due for renewal?

IIRC, whilst you have to report accidents to your insurer as soon as possible, it is not permitted to change your premium cost until renewal.

They are absolutely free to charge extra for a named driver's non fault claim. Just as your daughter is free to tell them to stick it and go elsewhere. As said, they can't increase the premium until renewal, and you don't have to disclose it until renewal, even if they tell you otherwise. Any request for immediate notification is just advisory, not enforceable.

My daughters policy is not up for renewal.

She noticed a deduction in her credit card from her insurers. Phoned to ask why and they told her it was due to my non fault claim.

She has taken me off her policy and they gave her £37 back but charged her £20 for the pleasure. She’s furious with them as you’d imagine.

I only drive (drove) the car a couple of times a year (mot and any service trips)

If the accident in the wife's car happened after the commencement of your daughter's insurance policy I would be, in no uncertain terms, demanding that all funds taken were refunded and you were re-instated onto her policy at no additional charge. Should they not do this I would be progressing either an ombudsman complaint or a back charge-back - they details of insurance would have been correct at the time of writing the risk - what matters.

However, if the policy was renewed after the date of the accident, not the date it was resolved, they would have been within their rights to levy an additional charge.

Wow ... the insurance company was not even informed and they still took money without authorisation ... Does your daughter have a continuous authorisation for the use of the CC on her policy?

I assume that it is the same insurance company that insures both cars.

Did the incident happen before the start date of your daughters policy ?

Just checked the dates and my daughters policy re-newed after the incident with my wife’s car.

She wasn’t aware a non fault claim by me (wife’s policy) would have any effect on her policy.

Lesson learned.

Even though we were parked, as I was sitting in the drivers seat, I was technically driving.

I’m still aggrieved they took money from my daughter’s card without even informing her of the reason.

In these days of internet/email policies - Is it possible that they sent her an email about updating the policy, but she did not read the email or it went into her spam folder ?

I'm sorry, but it really amused me that we go on about the poor quality of ladies' driving - Then you have an affect on the policies for both your wife and your daughter. smile
