Has anyone else noticed that, since Darling vomited his Orwellian vision over us, there has been virtually zero discussion about speed cameras in the public arena?!?

Could it be that the government realised how contentious Speed Cameras were becoming so unveiled a totally preposterous plan guaranteed to get our backs up. In doing so we focus all our attention on getting this new abortion blocked, and lo' and behold, Speed Cameras take a back-seat, leaving the government and SCPs free to do what they like...

What's that old saying? "Hold them by the nose while you kick them in the arse." We're being distracted by a feint here guys...but it's a good one, and one we can't afford to ignore!!!

Yeah, road tolling charges and GPS tracking and all that have taken my attention away from the scamera problem surprisingly quickly.
Will never happen, would take too much effort for the government to implement compared to cash cow camera's run by locals in the name of "safety"

Interesting theory, but I suspect you are crediting Alistair with rather more intelligence than experience suggests he is endowed with. If indeed "endowed" is the correct terminology.

You're assuming they don't plan to introduce road charging ! I think they do and have probably got a lot of the logistics sorted out already. Scameras will only get greater in number and the only way to stop them is either for a mass uprising against them (not going to happen) or for the Police to start getting giggy with Darling, which given the current performance of the senior plod seems unlikely.

I think in 10 years time we will have GPS based road chargin, speeding fines, red light cameras (if the traffic lights are linked into the system then they know when they are red) automatic parking fines (they know which roads are no parking) - it will all be automatic based on the feedback from a little box under the bonnet of the car.

Car manufacturers will be forced to fit them as standard as part of the alarm/ignition system - the car won't run without it. It will be registered as part of the vehicle registratioon process, hence the current fining of previous owners who don't alert DVLA to owner change - all part of the bigger plan to put these things into place later on with as little hassle as possible.

They will even share the info with the police who will know who to finger regarding a crash/drive off/shooting by collating the data from the positioning systems.

They will sell the data to car manufacturers who could use it to reduce warranty claims - they know how fast you've been going etc The AA/RAC will be interested too. Everybody will be interested - you might even find adverts appearing on your in car screen when your speed falls below 5mph - with a forced delay before the engine turns off to make sure you read the ad.

It has rather buried Linda Mountain's study showing that speed bumps are more effective than speed cameras. Do you think that was the intention?
