Trademark issues with car decals?

Someone recreates their favourite rally or race car, so they attach stickers/decals of the original sponsors' logos.

Have there ever been trademark claims from companies for this sort of thing?

I looked at the law:

and it repeatedly says:

"in the course of trade"

So if you're not trying to make money from the trademark, it's legal?

Broadly speaking, yes. But please be aware that trademark law has some complexity and a simple answer may be misleading.

The seller of a sticker that says, for example, Castrol or Dunlop ought to have obtained permission to use the trademark from the owner of the mark. The end user who is not using the mark in the course of trade does not need such permission.
