Used Car Question

Simply put, bought car, given old log book so can’t reg or tax on line. Need to go to PO and fill out V62 at a cost of £25, but car still taxed under dealers (from house) name. Question, car now insured by new owner, still taxed under previous owner, can it be driven legally by new owner until end of month then re-reg and tax on the 1st March? Tax is £260 so it would (nearly) save the £25 on Febs tax.

Assuming the seller sends his half of the V5 to the DVLA then the tax will be voided.

On paper it is going to stay taxed until the registration is processed, but I wouldn't hold back on getting the v5 sorted for the sake of saving £25

That’s the issue, don’t think he’s got the new V5 so he can’t send anything.

If you have the old v5 it wont cost £25. Hand it in along with v62.

Seemed a little strange as car was only re registered two weeks ago. Not that I’m worried as I have dealers address, three keys, full service history, bank details, the full works, except new V5.

To be honest, I would be suspicious that the car you just bought might have been sold by the same dealer in late January (hence the new V5 date) and then returned to the seller for a refund, perhaps as a result of an issue.

Probably never find out the real reason. Car only has 34k on clock and drives and runs fantastically with a full service history. Our visit to the post office this morning resolved the log book issue, old V5 sent off, car taxed with no issues and no £25 fee.
