I'm due to travel to Le Mans next week but unfortunately the DVLA still have my V5 document. The reason being that I transferred my number from one car to another on the understanding that they would give me back the V5 one week later. They've only given me a bit at the bottom (the green bit) that says 'Re-registered as xxx'. How do i stand legally if i go to france without it, and is there any way to get my V5 back before i leave?

Help please!

Cheers

Try this:

www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/v62_newfee.htm

There's a number you can call for duplicates with a credit card.

Nice one. The number is permanently engaged though which is a pain! Any idea how long it will take to reach me?

You reminded me that I didn't have the new type V5 for an old Land Rover that is off the road, so I rang 0870 240 0010 a few minutes ago. 3 options later, a cheery little Swansea lass took my credit card details (£19) and is sending it first class so I should get it the start of next week. Good luck!

I found this as well:

B. Temporary Exports
If you are taking your vehicle out of the country for less than 12 months you must make sure you take your Registration Document (V5) / Certificate (V5C) with you. If you do not have one, you should apply to a DVLA Local Office on form V62. The Registration Certificate may take up to 14 days to arrive. If you need to travel during this time you will need to apply for Temporary Registration Certificate. You should apply well before your journey, as there could be delays of up to 14 days in issuing the Certificate if you are not already recorded as the vehicle keeper. There is a fee for this service.

I was in the similar situation (new car, no v5, trip abroad) a decade back and i drove to a local DVLA office and they issued a temporary one on the spot. Might be different now but worth a phone call to your local DVLA office.

I called the DVLA and they said there was nothing they could do because if they issue a temporary certificate it will still have my old reg on it so it will be useless. They did however say that the green bit they sent back to me will suffice while in france... not too sure about that though.
