This is a fairly dangerous section of road, with many distractions (I grew up not far from it) - I can promise people here, a speed camera most certainly is not the correct course of action.

Dual carriageway at 30mph with many many side streets, and lots of pedestrians, and no central reservation = disaster. Want to make this road safer? Distracting drivers with a speed camera isn't the answer. How about reducing the flow to 3 lanes, and installing a central reservation? How about double yellows on Bolton road to eliminate the hundreds of parked cars? How about improving the road surface which resembles the face of a 14-year old? How about installing barriers outside the fronts of the 5-6 pubs that are along that small stretch?

The link for the story isn't right (it's the vandalism in the Jewish cemetery), but we are talking about Bolton Road, Radcliffe, near Bury? I live in the same council area and use this road daily.
Local feelings are running high for a speed camera to be installed after a teenage girl was killed late one night in early 2004 after consuming alcohol then stepping in front of a passing car that happened to be speeding (and the driver was only charged with speeding, he was subsequently found not guilty).

If you remember a letter in the letters pages of the Bury Times (couple of months ago) about unregistered cars and illegal drivers signed 'Devil's Advocate', well that's me (and there's another on its way).

A better starting point would be to teach kids the Green Cross Code, and teach some parents Parent Skills.

What was a 15 year old girl doing drinking alcohol in the late evening then 'unexpectedly stepping out' into the path of a moving car? Sort these kinds of problem out (and they are widespread round here) and there's no need for a speed camera.

Sorry to be abrupt, but this particular local topic gets up my nose (it gets lots of local newspaper coverage every week - all of it emotional, along the lines of 'remember the innocent children', 'peace on the roads is good' and 'we lost our child to someone doing twice the speed limit' which is factually incorrect!).

Rich.
