"Parked car" insurance
Discussion
If it's going to be parked on the road then it can't be SORNed which means (and correct me if I'm wrong someone) that it'll have to be insured as it would if it were in use. Probably won't make much difference to the premium anyway and it'll be useful to be able to press it into action if you need to unexpectedly.

Just ask your usual insurer for laid up AD fire and theft cover.
I would be surprised if this covered a car left parked on a public road but I stand to be corrected. When I was looking at it for one of my cars it had to be parked off road in a locked/secure garage or similar.

Who mentioned SORN?How much is the difference in premium likely to be ?
Negligible I’d have thought?
Insurers would probably see an unattended car left for months as a higher risk than one in regular use
I’d just keep the insurance as normal or look at multi car insurance to lower costs .. plus you’d still have the option to drive it occasionally and keep it all working properly or if your other car was faulty

What happens if the car is parked but taxed and MOT'd (no insurance)?
Do the police try to contact the owner via DVLA records and then clamp the car with a note it will be towed and crushed if no proof of insurance (or fine paid for same) is sorted within 48 hours?
I know when I change insurer the police database (MID) is rarely updated for days, meaning yes so far as the police ANPR check goes, I am not insured.
(I do actually make sure I park on the drive during this period as yes, don't want to wake up and the car is clamped or gone!)

I don’t think so. A vehicle that is being used regularly surely has a higher risk of causing damage / injury to a third party rather than one that remains parked up. Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
