Use of toilets at a customers/3rd parties site.

I've heard lots of ifs, buts and maybe's on this over the years, but would like some clarity if possible?

I'm a lorry driver and often go to customer and 3rd party sites to deliver or collect goods. If I need to use the loo can they out right refuse me access to toilet and washroom facilities?

I've always thought not, but am just a humble lorry driver after all.

I can understand it in a way, (some lorry drivers are not the greatest example of personal hygiene.)

I also understand that in the current climate that lots of places will want to be even more guarded than normal, but surely refusing someone the right to use a loo is a bit of a piss take? (Intended pun.)


I have rarely had a problem over the last 30 years, but at a new collection today, signs were up everywhere that outside drivers COULD NOT use their facilities.

If you are pregnant the land owner must allow you to wee in his helmet, if your vehicle has more than 2 axles he must also let you st in it too.
(no you have no rights to use anyone's toilet)

This was covered on Radio 2 earlier today and the suggestion was that it was ridiculous not to allow delivery drivers to use the toilets. However not sure what can be done about it other than name and shame. It was on the Jeremy Vine show probably around 1.30, might be worth a listen it was Dr Sarah or whatever her name is who was asked about it

The Workplace (health, safety and welfare) Regulations cover the requirement for toilet facilities at workplaces. Obviously remote workers fall outside this but there is a clarifying statement on the HSE website and the guidance is due to be updated to clarify that drivers must have access to welfare facilities in the premises they visit as part of their work:

The law changed a while back, you do have the right to use facilities at somewhere you are delivering to now.

Enforcing that right is a different matter, as always...

There's always one trucker that goes too far in the facilities that ruins it for everyone else - washing the grease off themselves, washing parts off their HGV, having a near full-on bath with a sink and a face towel...

walking to work past a lorry driver ascending to his cab, i rubbed against the hedge as it was tight, only to realise it was warm, and quickly looking to see lorry driver with empty bottle and cap off. The weird thing was, he was a she so not sure on mechanics of it.

That'll only work if it's bog roll.

Ex long haul European owner driver here. The facilities in the UK for drivers is and always has been dismal treating truck drivers like second class citizens.
The rest of Europe caters for drivers with vastly superior facilities ref hygiene and food.
France, Spain and Germany have superb truck stops compared to the UK and drivers are treated so much better. One of my favourite if I was ever that way is Guieselwind on the M3 nr Frankfurt, a real home from home.
Unfortunately a small %age of drivers do spoil it for others in the UK, crapping in a carrier bag and hurling it in a hedge doesn't help the general publics image. This sort of thing is classed as pretty antisocial in euro land but for some over here it's a way of life..

That's quite mad. I work at a company where about 600-700 of the production staff are Eastern european. Their toilets are disgusting. It's that hole in the floor they have to squat over. After they've been, they're supposed to hose it all down but never do. Whenever I walk past in the corridor, it absolutely reeks.

I would never refuse a delivery driver using the toilet if asked at home or work. People need to go!

Maybe if he'd felt he was able to ask customers in the first place he wouldn't have been so desperate.....
