Is it possible to find a list of court cases local to me?

A few years back my neighbours were ripped off by a cowboy builder and have just heard today he is in prison. Having googled his name followed by various things such as court/sentence etc I can find nothing at all.

I have no real reason for looking apart from curiosity so not particularly important.

Surely a Ct clerk could find it. Is this a case of them not being allowed to provide information?

Approximately 1% of cases make it into the local rag.

Maybe, If it was a crown court and it's not a usual name or you can narrow it down by a date range or offence it's easier.

I'm sure the Cts have a database to search by. It's maybe not accessible to the public.

Thanks for the replies, name is uncommon (took less than a minute to find on social media) but have no idea of offence, when it was or what court.
Last time i tried this it had been reported in the local rag but that chap had stolen a bungalow, I'm guessing the rip off builders crime wasn't quite to this level.
Dumb question but can people get sent to prison by magistates?

Yes but I think they can only sentence for 6 or 12 months so any really serious crime wil lgo up to crown

your best bet is to phone the magistrates where the suspects lives and the magistrates where the offence occurred as one of those would have heard it at the start before dealing with it or sending it up to crown court

Resources are limited. There is no secrecy about the vast majority of cases - open justice is the ruling principle, but.... the whole system runs on a budget of 45p.

There is no general database of every little case. Many judgments at High Court level and above are on various websites such as bailii, but small civil claims, and cases before magistrates, are not systematically recorded online.

(Don't) try asking a court employee at a local court (if you can find one) to search for some case about some bloke from years ago. The reply that you receive may be curt.
