Rear High Mounted Stop Light

I have a MR2 MK3 with a third brake light mounted on the engine cover.

I recently bought a rear mounted engine cover rack to use when going away (was planing to go away for a week next Monday) but realize that it will cover the brake light.

Question for all you real experts is, is it illegal, I am guessing it is?

Yeah. I think you'd be in bother if it's noticed. As a suggestion you could have a temporary 4th light that mounts on top of your luggage. You can get various 3rd light led kits.

Many people have rear mounted bicycle carriers that when loaded hide the centre brake light or tow trailers that have light boards without centre brake lights. Based purely on that observation I'd say you're likely to be OK.

I think travelling during the lockdown will be more problematic than a rear light.

•Bikes can obscure rear lights and/or number plate, so lighting board with number plate and rear electrical supply may be needed to be road legal.

Although I'll admit I rarely see it done.

Not if the 'normal' brake lights are still visible. We have a high level brake light on our motorhome that stopped working and no matter what just wouldn't work again. Our garage said to simply cover the light over and it would be fine, if we left it uncovered then it would be an MOT failure. It's been covered for the last two MOTs and has gone through without issue. All other lights on the van work perfectly.
