Cash for crash doctor erased from Medical Register

The car insurance industry has been staging something of a fight back against manufactured claims. Such claims are, regrettably, sometimes supported by some dodgy lawyers, and also by some dodgy doctors.

Here the High Court gets tough with one such doctor, who ran a report writing factory covering a variety of bogus or exaggerated claims, including motor accident claims. The regulatory tribunal had suspended him, but on appeal by the GMC and a related regulator the Court increased the sanction to erasure from the register (in old fashioned terms, the quack has been struck off).

Note that the same doctor had already been done for contempt in proceedings issued by an insurance company. I think that received some coverage here last year.

PS: in before the racists: Yes , the doctor has a name that indicates he may be, you know, brown, but (a) so what? and (b) the bogus claimants and dodgy lawyers include plenty of white people too.

Hiya racist! Sorry to rain on your racist parade but the appalling quack in this case was definitely on the Medical Register, and was indeed an actual doctor, although not an honest one.

I'm not going to deny that there are examples of it happening - but this isn't just a "foreign Doctor" problem - and I'm pretty sure it's thankfully very rare.

Whilst this chap was probably as guilty as hell, it stinks that the GMC can try a doctor via their own Medical Practitioner Tribunal Service (about as independant as my arse), and can then essentially appeal against their own ruling if the verdict isn’t what the top brass wanted.

The chap running the NHS in Cornwall had a made up CV with made up Qualifications. He was white.

Do you mean the subject of this thread? Yes a good solid English name, Asef Zafar!!! Certainly doesn't get more British than that. But that case is more complicated and delves into the subject of "fixers", which is an actual job which a lot of Brits don't understand, but is a part of everyday life in many countries around the world. This man rather than employing a fixer to fake his qualifications, appears to have been one himself.

If you mean more generally, then yea it's happened, it's just must harder to get away with it if you were born and educated in the UK.
Its probably more to do with language barriers when comes to obtaining verification of qualifications and a failure to properly investigate at the point of employment.

I enjoyed reading that judgement, but it says a lot that this pretty much only came to light due to a mistake by a paralegal. Were that not to have occurred LVI would presumably have been buggered.

Also found this statement rather baffling in context of the multiple references to a “report writing factory”:

“There is no suggestion of any corruption underlying Dr Zafar's actions.”

I don’t know how revising a sworn statement at the behest of a solicitor, without re-examining the patient at all, can be described as anything but corrupt. It’s not as if his private business was successful for any other reason than his inclination to write whatever he was asked to write.
