Hi all, a question for insurance experts if I may. . . . . . when my insurance has ' I can drive another insured vehicle 3rd party ' are there any exceptions assuming the car is roadworthy and I'm not under the influence? Cheers

Ignoring the inevitable "emergency use only" posts - what do your documents say? They will tell you what your covered for - not some bloke on the internet who doesn't even know what insurance company your with.

Yeah, check your policy document. I've had some that included a value limit on the car.

I've never seen a policy that specified that a level of cover (beyond - it must have some) the other car must have. What insurer?

Mine says the other vehicle must be insured but doesn’t mention level of cover.

And mine is silent on the matter which means it wouldn't need to be covered elsewhere.

Highlights the importance of checking the specific policy documents.

I've driven other people's cars 3rd party only a few times.

But as stated above, check your documentation. My cover with Direct Line in 2019 made no stipulation about the other car, but my current policy with Hastings specifically states that the other person's car must have its own insurance policy in place.

Or possibly by your spouse and/or members of household. As mentioned above, IMPORTANT to read your policy.

Why, it only gives tpo cover.

Who knows? I've seen strange clauses.

To stop you insuring a 1 litre stbox and "getting your mate to buy" a V10 M5 for you to "borrow" daily.

Then they'd need a grouping or BHP limit. You can get some very powerful cars that are old and have a low value. I've seen a value limit on a Chubb/ Tradex comp DOC extension, but never on a standard tpo DOC cover.

YOU and only YOU really need to check with your insurance company.

because thinking you are insured "because a guy on a forum website, who you don't know, said it was alright", is no defense in law.

Very much this ^^^^^^
There are so many variations between insurance companies and terms related to the individuals that your documents is the only place to check.
You must also always check the details when you receive them, either by email or regular post. You may find errors or exclusions not apparent when you signed up online or by phone. You query and sort these out then, not discover them too late when something has happened.
As an example, I added my son to a policy as a named driver for a car as he was home for a year. Done by phone on a Friday. He drove the car over the weekend. On Monday I checked the paperwork. Bloody hell!
He was showing as a named driver ok. Further on in the exclusions section it stated he was not covered to drive! A phone-call sorted it but I queried the weekend driving legality as it was before receiving the papers with the added exclusion. They backtracked , removed the exclusion and all became ok.
