Still waiting on V5... Tax due start of June

Not sure what route to go down here...
Bought an E46 M3 off a friend of mine at the very start of lockdown, about 7 weeks or so ago now. Car had his private plate on. As it was a friend, I was quite content with taking the car with no V5 as he couldn’t do the plate swap online and had to send it off. When he sent it off he also filled in my details... so if all goes to plan, he gets his plate retention back, I get new V5 in the post. Happy days.
However, DVLA are shut/not working at their usual processing rate... so as a result I still have no V5. Checking online the car still comes up with his reg, and the original reg (that the car is wearing parked on my drive) still comes up as nothing. It’s tax is due on 1st June... I have no real way of taxing it. I’m quite happy not to drive the car, it can sit as long as needs be but I don’t really want my friend getting any fines through the post as it’s still technically reg’d to him.
He’s suggested he tax it using the reminder form he has received, and I just pay him for each month that goes by until this is rectified. Can anyone see any issues with doing this?

If you haven’t re-taxed the car already, as the new keeper, then DVLA will not process the change of keeper OR registration anyway and simply send the paperwork back to the previous keeper. I had exactly this issue as the seller when I sold my car with private plate still on it last year.

My wife and I have bought 3 cars since the end of March and haven’t found the DVLA to be particularly slow. 7 weeks seems extraordinary. Did he fill in the forms wrongly?
He should have been able to retain the plate online, get the new V5 through in a couple of days and then notify the transfer online.

This is the thing, the online service wouldn’t let him swap the plate online so he had to post it off. I had the same 18 months ago when I sold my Evo 6, it said I had to post it off but the previous time I swapped a plate on my Civic Type R it worked online no problems.

OP, this is the link to the DVLA page advising what you need to do (yes, I know, some posters will say OP should’ve Googled, but meh). Hopefully you’ll be able to sort it. I know the link says “without V11 Reminder”, but the page also covers new keeper and no V5. You’ll need to go to the Post Office and fill in a V62. You may even be able to download and print the form at home, potentially saving you doing it at the post office or making two trips,I didn’t realise you could tax a car at the PO without a V5... will do some research

I've transferred plates many times and I was denied doing it online just once. I think it was because the car had undergone more than one registration change. This probably gets flagged up for closer checking.
Once, I was requested to have the car inspected and the VIN checked (took a number plate off an old Morris Minor), but it was back in 1994 when they still had local DVLA offices!
