Can a digital Gatso take a pic from the front?

An old Gatso has been replaced by a new digital one ( like this ) and lines have been painted on the other side of the road, are they the same as old ones and only able to take images from the rear or can they also take a pic of the front of the car? I haven't been caught but thought it handy to know for sure as they all seem to have lines on both sides of the road despite the camera being on one side and the camera not being turnable.

I’m pretty sure the new ones can take pictures from both directions although I’ve not been brave enough to test this.

Lines on both sides of the road don’t mean much - I’ve always assumed they’re there to stop speeding drivers evading a ticket by driving on the wrong side of the road.

Have noticed this too and now working on the assumption that the camera operates in both directions simultaneously

They also use them to photograph the other carriageway occasionally and this can catch out the unwary.

Take your front number plate off and wear a Covid mask and go and try it out. I’m doubting it will myself.

Gatso digital speed cameras take rear facing pictures only - Just like the old film-based Gatso cameras.

Truvelo speed cameras take pictures from the front.

With the camera in the OP's link (a digital Gatso), my understanding is that if a vehicle speeds past the camera on the "wrong" side of the road, the camera will still detect it and catch the driver, and the white lines can be used to assist in a prosecution (stands by to be corrected on that one). It won't however, catch an oncoming driver who is speeding, because it is not type approved for taking a front facing picture.

If there was another post for the camera at the other end of the white road markings, then the camera could be moved to catch cars speeding in the opposite direction, but I can't see any post or fixture there.

The white lines painted on the oncoming traffic lane, will also serve the purpose of slowing oncoming drivers down, who are not aware of the camera type in use.
