NIP - Foreign License

Hi all,

A friend of mine with both a UK and foreign (not European) license was caught by a camera. The NIP says, under the How to Surrender Your License section, that he can send a photo copy of his foreign license in with the S172 form.

It says on various forums that I've read that they will create a new record on the DVLA for this foreign license and assign the points to it. Question is, will they do the math and realise that he has a UK license, and assign the points there instead?

Do you need to ask?? And besides, his UK one was not with him...he hired the car using his foreign license.

Surrender the details to the UK one. As has been demonstrated in recent times, PCoJ has been used as a deterrent for avoiding penalty a few times now. A few points is small fry to what they can do with that - and you'll probably get the points anyway to boot.

Sort of!
They will create a UK 'ghost' license for any one who has committed an offense and does not have a valid UK license. This could be for underage offenses, someone who has never had a license, or foreign licenses This will record any endorsements applicable. This is then filed away for future reference.
When anyone applies for a UK license (full, provisional or foreign exchange) it will be automatically checked to see if there is any 'ghost' license in existence. If so, the two licenses will be sort of 'joined together' and therefore any existing points will be added to the new license.

In this case it is sort of ass about face so when the 'ghost' license is created it will instantly realize there is already a valid license in existence.

So no escape!!

The licence, which ever one, was not the driver. and it is the driver who is convicted/fined/points, by taking noting his licence to drive to that effect

If hes not a resident of the UK he should not be driving on a uk license so should submit his foreign one.
If he is a resident of the uk for more than 12 months and just happens to have a foreign licence from past conquests he could end up in more trouble if he doesnt submit his uk one.

And in answer to your question - Maybe.
I've had 3 points placed on my UK license after being stopped by a patrol car and presented my UAE one.

My wife was flashed and submitted her UAE license and no points have made their way to her UK one.
