Time to put on private plate (from ordering to delivery)

I’ve been meaning to upsize from my Audi A1 for a while, and I’ve finally found a nice C class at a dealer near me. I also wanted to treat myself to a private plate, and was wondering what people’s’ experiences are of getting a plate specifically for a new car? Rather get it done when I’m buying the Merc to avoid the £10 admin fee

Thesedays, you can't apply a cherished plate to a car unless you have the V5 in your name (unless it is brand new.)
If the dealer completes the paperwork online to register your purchase (v5 update), you'll get the new v5 in 3-5 days and then be able to apply the registration plate straight away online (unless in unusual circumstances)

I've recently sold 2 vehicles and bought one - each time it was 3 or 4 days from "activity" on DVLA website to receiving the paperwork. Collected car Friday, new V5 came Weds and applied new reg straight away, etc.

7 weeks ago i tried to change a reg number online, no luck. needed to do by post, so still waiting since posting on 1st may.

Dead easy. Move to New Mexico, pick what you want on the plate and pay the $17

Same here, bought a number from DVLA, got the certificate in 4 days. Tried to do the swap online. No luck. Cannot be bothered to post it off, so will wait until they are fully functional again and give them a call.

Having had a private plate sat at home for two years, I decided I would change it over on Monday. A call to the insurance company and the completion of the online process with DVLA and it was all done inside 20 mins.

If you are getting a new car, the dealer should handle it all, so long as you own the reg plate and have the necessary certificate of ownership of said 'plate
