This one sentence says it all......
“the pricing system would be needed to cope with the introduction of road tolls, which could overwhelm trains by encouraging thousands of car drivers to switch to rail.”
Times Online link|http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1662717,00.html

Must feel like a kick in the googlies for whoever voted Blair/Ken back in huh?

Well I can say for sure that the already highest costs in Europe (the world?) aren't helping congestion, so how is raising the cost further???

FFS. Shirley the whole point of a congestion charge is to "encourage" (in the big stick school of encouragement) folk to switch to other modes of transport? Its not like everybody's just going to stop going to work because it costs a lot to get there, now is it?

This is the flaw in the integrated transport plan. No one ever thinks far enough forward. Their idea of integaration is to stop people travelling who cannot contribute to the work place. So they will price people off the roads first then price them off trains and then buses will look attractive so put those prices up. Once a generation have got used to sitting in front of a tv watching other people travelling they will have acheived their goal.

How is this any different to peak rate travel being more expensive? We've had this for years.

Indeed.

In fact, its like buses - no return tickets before 9am. Why ever not? Surely the idea should be to incentivise you to commute via bus rather than car? Oh no - screw the workers for every penny insteaf...

Exactly, just as 'pay-as-you-drive' is effectively the same as our current system of tax on fuel.

I would guess it's about to get a lot worse. Many more will be forced out of their cars during due to the looming extension of the congestion charging zone. What will happen when the national rollout takes effect?

It's all about money . . . everything New Labia and their representatives are doing is about raising more tax, nothing else. They want more and more of our money and absolutely will not stop until they get something like 80% of our 'disposable' income.

When will people realise this ???

Well, not quite "nothing else" - there's the endless creation of public sector jobs to oversee all this extra tax gathering...

The problem is; with ANPR they can track you but with GPS tracking some people will be priced out of their cars including many would be terrorists. This rail proposal uses smartcards so those evil doers can be tracked round the rail network too...

Here's your answer...........

Be a scutter/townie/hoody/scum bag.

No job, plenty of kids - that's your house and income sorted out,
No need to travel - see above. No fear of being sued/prosecuted by anyone.
BAGS of free time to indulge in any hobby you wish, and you can sit outside, on these long balmy summer evenings laughing at Mr Middle England next door, toiling and slogging his guts off paying for it all!

What a fool this 'Mr Middle England' must be!

I just had a meeting in London with a guy who had to travel there from Telford.
The cost of a one-day 'economy' ticket Telford - Euston return was £114.
Now whilst that might seem a little high one now has to consider that he had to STAND all the way as there were no seats left.
Next time he'll use his SAAB at 30 mpg, that's about £30 for petrol plus a bit for parking and possible a few quid for a tube fare into the City.Bear in mind his car has 4 comfortable seats as well.
Use public transport - having a laugh ain't they!

It seems the government just want everyone to live in the town where they work, or to tax everyone out of working at all.

It will soon be too expensive to work

I live more than 40 miles from my office, and I cannot afford to keep moving house just because I move job, unless the government force employers to pay relocation expenses to all employees that live more than 20 miles from their office.

I like it where I live and do not want to be forced to move because of this Labour government.

As mentioned above about the Telford trip totally agree.

As said you already pay peak fares and have off peak fare already, but most times you have to travel you have to book on peak

I go to London fairly regularly from suburbs of Manchester. Costs between car and train are roughly as follows.

Train
1st class Stockport to London return £288 (std fare £168) Time 2.13hrs plus taxi to station 30 mins £20 and taxi other end £20-40 15-40 mins. Total cost £330 approx, total time 3hrs +

I could take public transport to get to and from the stations but it would add around an hour to the journey but would only cost £10-12 each way .

Car
210-30 miles time last time 3hrs 20 mins (worst 4hrs) cost £75 petrol there and back, plus extra depreciation for 420-450 miles) (got normal costs of car anyway).

Plus for the train is you can work a bit on it, but it's usually too hot, it's not very comfortable and luggage is restricted to what you can carry and fit on and the safety of equipment is a concern.

I actually prefer using the car, much more convenient, if my departure time changes it's still instantly available and I’m still guaranteed a seat. It’s more comfortable and it’s my personal space (Ah radio four and my driving slippers on ) and as much business or personal stuff as I want is all tucked up safe in the boot.

But the real difference is the price even factoring 450 miles extra deprecation on the car the train option has got to be at least 2.5 to 3 times as expensive

The great problem in this that I see, is that after "the government" has decided to "Tax" and "price" us out of our cars. Then the "Private" train and bus companies are going to see an excuse to raise their prices also,(to match the going travel rate) and raise profits. The A.T.O.C.(Association of Train Operating Companies) IS just that........"Private".

Now let me see....................MMmh! Now I know!!!! If we Nationalised the railways and the buses, we could keep the fares deliberately low to encourage usage!!

OOOh er!!!!...............

No, it's because the Government is running out of money and needs to screw it out of as many people as possible.
