I read on here a while back that people were using their horns as a protest against speed humps, the idea being that the residents would eventually request that the humps be removed.

I thought I’d test this out when a Jeep started parking on a A road near where I live. Although there were no double yellow lines, it was causing long tail-backs as the two way road was diminished to a shared single lane.

After a couple of weeks (and informing others of what I was doing) I actually started to witness other cars (which I didn’t recognise) giving long blasts as they passed. Eventually the Jeep started parking somewhere else.

So, given the success to date, here is my question…

Is it illegal to toot when passing a SCAMERA van? - Simply to make them aware of my presence and therefore potential hazard you understand. ;)

not sure - but streetcops colleagues in the vans used to think that people were tooting in support of them. wierd.

The North Wales Scammers parked on a bridge over a fast A road got one from me on Sunday - though I didn't do the same to the one parked in Llangollen in a 30 that looks like a 40 because the wife begged me not to.

should work either way...............

'scammers beggins motorists not to toot in support of their exemplary public duty as they are getting raging headaches and it is starting to annoy residents'

8 hours of horn blaring can't be that nice, and wearing earmuffs if a hot and sticky business in the summer.

I do, every camera that's within 100 yards of a house or office, it's one of the very few ways we can protest.

So you're saying that to ensure that my toot isn't interpreted as support for the scammers, I'd better make it more of a blast?

Better wait for someone to confirm the legalities before I try it out.

Also, best start thinking of a way to spread the message, which funnily enough brings me back to the bumper sticker title of the thread – Ted how’s about a new PH sticker?

Careful.

Whilst Reg 99 RV (Con and Use) Regs 1986 only states that a warning instrument shall not be sounded when stationary or on a restricted road between 2330 and 0700, Reg 97 states that no vehicle shall be used on a road in such a manner as to cause any excessive noise which could have been avoided by the exercise of reasonable care on the part of the driver.

Yes I imagine there is scope for an attempted prosecution there if someone were to be so minded.

In the case of speed humps I suppose it is possible for a hand to slip onto the horn pad (and remain there for several seconds ) due to the suspension bounce caused by the hump.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

It would be more useful if people driving away from a camera decided to test their lights....

Having just returned from Le Mans imagine how delighted I was to find that having observed this 'light testing' and slowed down accordingly; about 2 kms down the road their was a speed trap or the French police.

Well what a coincidence I thought to myself as I tootled by in our convoy

I toot every time I go over some speed humps near my digs, often before 7am. One day I happened not to toot and there was a police car waiting at the end of the road. I was driving a yellow van at the time and I'm sure they were looking at me as I passed...

It's a shame everyone doesn't toot every time then they'd soon have the buggers up.

Just a thought (apologies if asked before).

If a speed hump was placed in a 30 limit, and (for whatever reason ) a car sustained damage during an encounter with one of these whilst doing 29, can the driver sue the council for damages?

If mk6fiesta can successfully claim for damages from potholes (rightly so), then shouldn’t we also be able to claim against humps? (especially when placed on an unlit roads)
