Ive been out this morning and stopped 5 32,OOOkg Tippers.

All 5 were given a PG9 Prohibition and one of the drivers didnt have a Licence for such a vehicle.

A good days work in my book.....more enforcement needed i think.!

That's pretty worrying really, that HGVs are out there in an unsafe state!

Let alone sending one out with a driver not qualified to drive it - bloody nuts, their insurance company would have a fit!

Didn't you have anything better to do like catching murderers and rapists?

After all you were concentrating on road safety issues. Everyone knows that they are just a way to increase Govt coffers!!!

Might I ask as to the nature of the prohibition notices?

There should be more people like you.

Get these ers OFF THE ROADS!

I drive an 8Leg Tipper myself, and anytime there is a problem it gets snagged and sorted by the workshop that night, our trucks are checked once a month by the workshop!

All too often I see tippers driving along with obvious things wrong

What where the PG9's for??

Edited to Add, there should be more roadside checks done. Most drivers and operators hate getting stopped, me included, but at the end of the day, when you know that your vehicle is safe I can't see a problem.

Only once a month

That is scary

A truck could have a broken suspension or faulty tyre etc, and it would get unnoticed for up to a month.

Something needs to be done about this.

I think he`s talking about a workshop inspection. I am sure he does a walk round check on the wagon at the start of every shift - same as the rest of us.

I agree that the ones i targeted are easy prey.....but from experience they are the ones running on a shoestring. Some of them run an 8 legger on a budget fit for a Lada.

We now concentrate a lot more on the foreigners. Once upon a time (as im sure youre aware of), Police and the ministry shyed away from them because they were hard work and couldnt speak the lingo........now, so many of them take the p@@@ that our intelligence is directing us to deal with them, and im not talking about stealing a few hours here and there.

Sure its hard work.....but very rewarding all the same.

Sure, not a problem.

The first one had loose wheelnuts and when i tapped one it sheared off completely. This was caused by overtightening them over a period of time and not using a torque wrench. I certainly wouldnt like one of those crashing through my windscreen.

The second was for loose U bolts, Tacho seal missing and a brake actuater arm that was over-extending.

The Third was for leaking Air Brakes (Spring Brake)and of course - Driving on a car licence.

The Fourth for defective secondary (parking brake)

The Fifth for a Cab that was about to fall off and 2 dodgy tyres.

All very serious and easy to detect.

Yeah, sorry, should have been more specific.

By Law, All HGV's are required to have a workshop inspection, which I believe is the equivalent to an MOT Test (this one is carried out in house or by a dealer/3rd Party Garage and so you dont get a MOT Certificate at the end of it) every 6 weeks, the company I work for do all the Tippers every 4 weeks. Broken Springs, bald/damaged tyres, blown bulbs etc are picked up pretty much as they happen. Every driver is Required to do a walk round check at the start of each shift. I can't speak for anyone else, but my checks include, front and rear springs, tyres, wheel nuts, back door handles, bulbs, mirrors etc. This is done every morning.
