Temp insurance for BiL with US licence

My brother in law is coming to stay with us next month for around 30 days, he has an American driving license as I have two cars I was thinking about lending him one of mine. Looking around it seems quite tough to find temporary insurance for US driving licenses, EU and commonwealth are often covered but not USA

Has anyone had a similar issue? Any recommendations? Or would it just be easier if he hired his own car from the airport?

Have you tried asking your own insurer? Many offer a temporary additional driver for a small fee.
I had an Australian cousin on my policy however that was 10 years back

Why not just call your own insurer and have him added a a temporary additional driver and pay the fee ?

I was on hold with them for ages and couldn't get through as needed to do something else. I did try online but their site specifically says UK only. Hence asking the question.

Is your BIL English or American? If American, has he experience of a stick shift as the Yanks like to say, in America, even if you pass in an auto you are allowed to drive a manual as far as l know. I take it you will be lending him the Volvo, not the M3.
Most English people are happy driving in Europe, but l doubt Americans have much exposure to this kind of thing. A rental may be a better option for family unity and NCB.

If he’s from Georgia, he might struggle to rent a car. Almost guaranteed to have a bump. No idea if that’d be reflected with trying to insure.

He is European, lived here for a bit before moving to US. He can drive manual but the Volvo is auto and M3 manual, he won't be taking the M3 out!

Sounding more like hire just easier all round.

I asked a similar question to my insurer just recently. I am due to compete as a navigator on a Classic Car Rally in a few months time (CV restrictions permitting) and my American driver will be shipping his car across, but in the event that his car was not ready, he may use my classic car. My insurer's response was, that as we were both "mature" in age, there would be no problem putting him on my policy for the event.
