Bristol Statue
Discussion
Well I would like to know on this sensitive issue where the Police stand on the Removal of the Colston Statue and now in the Early hours of this morning a BLM Statue has been fitted in place.
You stood by when the old statue was removed and it seems now you have also stood by with the new statue being unofficially erected in the early hours of this morning.
Now it must have taken some equipment to place it up there, who was watching CCTV and decided to do nothing?
If statutes are to be erected, there is a procedure and the Council is involved, it seems that is not the case here?
Why did officers not stop this?

I will admit that my initial reaction was WTF? But upon reflection I guess that it should provoke debate which is no bad thing.
The issue I do have is that debate seems to be the last thing that a lot of the protesters have - they appear to be the ultimate puritans. You've done wrong and nothing you can do can atone for that. There is no chance of redemption - you're guilty and must be cancelled

Do you honestly, genuinely want police to be investigating the erection of statues and not dealing with actual crime?
Yes, especially if they are blatantly racist. Would it be OK if someone erected a statue of themselves doing a nazi salute or a white power symbol?
I don't see much difference.
And it doesnt require an investigation. We know who did it.
This will probably be my last word on the subject before this gets moved to NPE

Yes, I do.
What is the point in having laws if you can whatever you want anyway?
I suppose you never drive over 70 on the motorway? What is the point in having laws if you can whatever you want anyway?
The question is one of resources: any publicly funded service has an economically restricted limit on what it can do. The police are unable to really investigate vast numbers of crimes that affect people day to day e.g. car theft in my locality. It’s not because the cops are lazy or feckless, but because they have to prioritise. I would rather the police prioritised any number of crimes before they bother with harmless statues.
A lot of people who have absolutely no interest in statues are pretending to care because they’re upset their world view is being challenged.

What law do you think they have broken? Fly tipping or Criminal Damage? I’m not sure either of those offences, whilst technically could be argued, should be appropriate. I’m not sure “erection of a statue with intent to highlight racism” is illegal.

This. It's harmless. And if the Police acted there'd be renewed protests. Sometimes it's better to let sleeping dogs lie.

Lefty Marxist protestors have little interest in actual debate. And if a right wing protest group erected a statue of someone like Enoch Powell?
just leave it in case they protest it's removal?
Jen Reid, a stylist from Bristol, is hardly the lefty equivalent of Enoch Powell.just leave it in case they protest it's removal?
It's temporary, it's harmless, it continues the conversation.
Meh.
In terms of alleged Law breaking, I doubt if any statue can be erected without planning permission, for that reason it will no doubt be removed. Secondly it has been erected one supposes by people who believe it is appropriate at this time in history? One supposes the same mentality was used for the erection of the Colston one?
It would in all probability have needed a crane mounted vehicle to lift it on to the plinth. Now the question is what happens when an unruly mob carrying banners congregate around the statue and then decided to pull it down, throw paint over it and drag it to the harbour?
Interestingly, I was talking to a business colleague who was born and bred in Bristol, she was claiming there were "coaches of people from London" who attended the original crowd gatherings and fewer Bristolians. No critical data to prove that.

White power protestors are horrible and should be thrown in Jail, Black power protestors should be celebrated. got it.It's temporary, it's harmless, it continues the conversation.

I thought that 'anti racist' groups were fighting against one ethnic group fighting for power over other ethnic groups.
Equality is what we should ALL be fighting for, not power.
