Speed van opposite side of dual carriageway

I was on a dual carriageway way A road earlier, which has been put down to 40mph due to road works, my speedometer was showing 52-55mph, I know I shouldn't have been doing it.....
On the opposite side of the dual carriageway is a pavement which had a speed van on it, from research the camera is in the side of the van. I only noticed it late, and tried to slow, but not sure if I slowed in time.
Both sides of the road were busy, however I was in lane 2 when I passed, which would be nearer the van.
I am not sure if it can get both sides of the carriageway where it was, or if the operator could only get his side, as such.
Another point is that when I went back a few hours later the same van had been moved to cover the opposite carriageway, the one I had driven on earlier, to me this implies that it only covers one half of the dual carriageway at a time, would that be a fairly safe bet? Meaning it wouldn't have picked me up earlier on?

I wouldn't worry too much if both sides were busy, they can't aim at all the vehicles at once and unless you were doing a spectacular speed, he or she would be most likely concentrating on the carriageway they're on.
You're more likely to get caught when it's quiet, but conflicting traffic will get in the way of them sighting you properly when the road is busy.

Got done a few years ago by a van on the opposite carriageway of a wide dual dual carriageway with a wide grassy central reservation, I saw the van, I didn't think it could get me as I assumed it only got cars on the side it was on and cars approaching it, not going away from it.................. I was wrong!

If it was the w##kers on the A3 expect to get a letter through the post whatever side of the road they are parked. I firmly believe they CAN do both sides especially if it is a Sunday morning with absolutely nobody on the road to kill.

its a stock photo but the Lorry n in lane 1 was in a similar postion
I was in lane 2 , overtook a car in lane 1 , when I spotted a mobile camera van , roughly where the red car in the distance parked up near lane 1
normally the A31 is notorious for having a camera van frequently parked on the opposite carriageway ,in a dip ( next to Starbucks café ) , but seldom on the other carriageway ,the only mitigation was the Lorry was in my blind spot , so I stuck behind it in lane 1 , then as it approached the camera van, I overtook into lane 2 …( keeping at 50 mph ) .and a bit like in the smokey and the bandit movie , moved back into lane 1 … keeping it at all times in my blind spot
14 days of brown trouser expectation …...nothing , , extremely lucky , operator could have been having a break ? who knows but it was a wake up call for me

You get away with it sometimes
Once I was on the DC that turns into the M3 and I was frustrated behind 3 vans in the outside lane doing exactly 70mph. Inside lane was clear. I lost patience and undertoook the 3 vans at quite a pace. At the top of the hill I realised why the 3 vans were driving as they were - a camera van in the central reservation at the top. Honestly he must have been in a break, or looking in the distance, or I was blocked by the 3 vans. 3 weeks of absolutely s
tting myself checking the post daily. I never drove like that again I was absolutely convinced I’d be going to prison!

This not a lie, BUT they only have one manned camera for checking speed, the others are there to catch people who are speeding, but don't have front plates, ie bikers and BMW, Audi, Merc drivers in towns and cities hit worst by the coronavirus.
