Four up, 3AM, straight into a house with fireball too - Looking at the pictures I wonder if they were carrying a (fair bit) too much speed around some of the sweepers.

Seems fortunate nobody in the house was injured; but It'll be interesting to see what comes of the investigation.

Knowing the road it’s got to be too much speed in that location. The road is a fairly good one and it’s a 40 limit anyway due to the houses and pub etc.

Terrible that 4 have died though.

They dropped the speed limit on that section years ago, it's a fast road so agree with the too much speed comment

Terrible, these youngsters need to start slowing down. see way too many of them and older people speeding too much these days.

yes let's see if/how 'the blame' can be shifted ?

I'm surprised the lampost didn't get blamed when a Porsche hit it at over 100mph a few years ago.

Reports from TV news last night indicated that the vehicle hit the kerb stone on the left and then went on to leave the road on the right. The pictures shown did not have any evidence of braking or markings from the investigation.

What’s the betting that the Premiership lost the next big thing?

It's not fair to say that all youngsters are speeding, loads of them spend their first year or so with black boxes fitted to their cars which really restricts the opportunities to go crazy but would do nothing to stop someone attempting to drive a winding NSL road at 60mph when some corners are clearly not suitable for such speeds. I expect there are a number who as soon as they can afford/obtain insurance without a black box think that's it, they can do what they want with no consequences.

There is also no denying that as much as newer cars have better safety systems & driver aids these are not enough to compensate for lack of skills & poor risk assessment. Add the larger mass of new cars and generally speaking when they crash, it's going to be BIG damage all round.

Ah, so it’s the councils fault, for putting a kerb stone there and not a sand trap.

The black boxes have accelerometers that work from side to side as well as forward and backward, they can tell how hard you are cornering.

I drive the road regularly.

Not proud but I have been through there myself at 70+. (to be fair, it goes to 50 on the other side towards Chippenham, and national further up the hill) without any drama.

So these guys must have been either, very unlucky, or REALLY sending it. I would suspect the latter. Not going to guess if they were drunk or whatever. It doesn't matter. Shame to lose life so close to home.

A lot would depend on what vehicle they were in as well.

Dad’s BMW that he let them have for the night or a beaten up Corsa with knackered suspension and ditchfinder tyres.

The issue is that you have a fatal accident which given half a chance will be blamed on speed which might be correct. There may be other factors such as drink, drugs, car faults etc but ultimately the major factor will probably be speed.

However I would suggest that whilst the speed is excessive it is fact caused by the inability of the driver to gauge the ability of the car to stay on the road at that speed and the ability of the car to remain on the road. Just talking about speed doesn’t educate people as to why speed is important.

Of course the other thing here is the speed limit is potentially irrelevant if the car was going significantly in excess of it. A lower limit potentially wouldn’t have made them drive slower.

Well put it this way, I live 10 minutes from the road and drive it basically every day (well, every time I go out in my car).

There is NO WAY that damage and loss of life would happen at 40mph.

Try double that.

Unfortunately, as you say, to have a "30mph" limit, would have made , likely , no difference.

I hope they don't further reduce it. That road has previously (recently) had limits reduced. I think 30 on this road would be really bad.

Very unfortunate for all involved, sadly four lads in a car late at night and this can be the outcome, especially when high jinx and excess speed are involved. Most of us when younger have likely, whether driving or not, been in situations similar and lived to tell the tale. Obviously speculation around the speed atm but its clear that didn't happen at 40mph.

What car do we think it is/was?

I don't wish to be vulgar or inappropriate but it looks like a 1 series wheel to me?

I've seen some stoopid st on that road in the summer as the pub is/was a bike destination. They would have to have been going a fair speed. Any loss of life is a tragedy at that age,

Why would a road death investigation look to shift 'blame' - it's actually going to be looking at causality.

Awful for the families of those lost. I have driven the road many times in both directions, I would say excessive speed and not being to react adequately when something went wrong. When you drive that bit of road, the 40mph limit feels quite slow for the road.

Some of us get away with our youthful mistakes, others pay the ultimate price.

Don't think that will ever change.
