Cloned VRM - parking tickets?

I put a vehicle up for sale about a month ago, and never having had issues like this before, didn't blank the registration number. (Who does, really?)

Received a PCN from a town centre (40 mile from us) about three days ago from the day after the advert went live. I was at work (in said vehicle) at the time, and have not stepped foot in that area for probably 20 years. Logged onto the council system, to view the photographic evidence which revealed the same model vehicle except in an entirely different specification and colour.

I guess master criminal has seen my advert and thus fully insured and taxed vehicle and decided to take advantage of that. Car is no longer in my possession as it sold two days later.

I have notified local Police (took two attempts for them to even feign a remote interest) and have sent evidence to local council to obviously appeal the ticket. Anything else I really need to do?

I have also notified the new car owner in case of any future infringements, as they will likely fall on his door step instead.
