New scam

Just received this email.

Obvious tell tales of a scam.
I wonder if these hackers somehow have tabs on trafficgoing through the website and then sending these emails to those people? Surely something the govt. Need to keep an eye on if that is the case

I appreciate the poor quality of the picture but the jist of it is that there is an "irregularity" on my profile which needs to be resolved within 48 hours or i will get a fine. It then takes you to a page requesting you enter address and of course bank details.

Lately keep getting emails saying my TV DD has failed, log in here........ not that I pay by DD.

The phone call saying my Amazon Prime membership will auto renew, which I don't have.

Last by not least, the call to renew my washing machine insurance which strangely enough has two years to run on the manufactures guarantee, amazingly when I mention that the line goes dead, not even thank you sir.......

The registration number and reference number weren’t correct were they?

It’s a clear phishing attempt but that would be pretty weird if they were correct.

No. Ive just checked it against the email i got from the gov website when i sold the car and they have clearly used that email but as said without the reg plate or the ref/transaction id.

The email is of poor quality but strangely the website looked pretty legit apart from the web address.

It’s just scattergun then as said - send enough and some of them will go to people who just happen to have sold a car recently.

FYI Some other news is that email address is in the ‘have I been pwned’ database, associated with 1 data breach.

Wattpad: In June 2020, the user-generated stories website Wattpad suffered a huge data breach that exposed almost 270 million records. The data was initially sold then published on a public hacking forum where it was broadly shared. The incident exposed extensive personal information including names and usernames, email and IP addresses, genders, birth dates and passwords stored as bcrypt hashes.

Compromised data: Bios, Dates of birth, Email addresses, Genders, Geographic locations, IP addresses, Names, Passwords, Social media profiles, User website URLs, Usernames

The emails are intentionally a bit bag, they don't want competent people getting hooked and the bailing half way through when they realise it's bullst, wastes bandwidth, they want totally nieve technophobes who will go all the way!

Do we actually know there's not more to it than this? If so how? There are loads of ways these emails could be more targeted than just random. If I was a scammer and could get malware running I'd definitely target people when they renew their car tax. It would be much more effective than mass emails.

The TV Licence scam emails come from an email address with .be in the address.

Because the UK TV Licencing Authority are based in Belgium, obviously.

I have edited my first post to remove the email now as to keep my email private as previously mentioned. I realised i probably shouldnt have clicked on the link and i instantly removed all cookies and such like and performed a full scan so hopefully fine from that. I guess it could be a coincidence it was just with how it was my very next email after i received the actual one from the govt and i had never seen this type of scam before. The obvious ones like the tv licence i recieve every week it seems. I have also checked to see if i was part of any of the data breaches and i was not.

I see June 2020. Last time i checked would have been before that. Weird thing is i dont ever remember setting up a wattpad? Internet is just a rancid place really isnt it.
