This has got to be the most annoying thing on the road.

Everyone else taking their turn, but one kunt (to use wild cats words) thinks he and all his gold can push in at the front.

Research has shown that the fastest way to filter two lanes of traffic into one is for the lanes to merge over a distence, so the guy "pushing in" is in fact just speeding things up. The only problem is that this behaviour is seen as socially unacceptable. As to letting someone in, what does it cost you to let them in and feel good about one's own virtue.
Last month the whole M4 was grid locked because two P**** got jammed into one lane at an exit and neither would give way.

had to laugh at this you should visit Russia ..

unbeleavable driving where everyone pushes in ........no matter where , supermarket .....post office .........petrol station.........bloody airport !!!

etc. have worked out here for a year , and discussed with several Russians ........reply was they had to queue for so long in soviet times now they all try to queue jump.....its become acceptable.

strangely this does not lead to road rage !!!

as a jonny foreigner ( Brit ) waiting in queue for plane once ..........nearly did a vinny jones on some scroat who tried to push past me ....

he was genuinely surprised that he was being told how it done in the UK ...ha ha

You used to sometimes see 'merge in turn' signs when a lane was closed off with cars/arrows advising the 2 lanes of traffic to merge together near the cones in a zip-fastener fashion.

Never see these any more - they worked.

Public info broadcasts in Germany have done the same since the 1970s. But then we all prefer the autobahns anyway

We have "filter in turn" signs all over the place here (Jersey). They really do work extremely well and I am surprised that their use is not widespread in the UK. Even on junctions where the signs are not erected, it seems that sub-consciously people have been conditioned to "filter in turn".

I often find it quite unerving that traffic can approach junctions and enter traffic flow at quite some speed, having complete trust that the cars coming the other way are using the same system.

Foreigners seem completely flummaxed by it all!

Fair enough, but isn't the issue whether you can smoothly filter into position without causing any interruption to other people, or whether there isn't a natural space for you to move into, so that you have to crowbar your way in front of people who really were there before you?
When you can pull off the first you feel clever, but when you misjudge it and have to resort to the second you feel like a dope.

Surely for the confrontation to occur you have to have two drivers thinking along the lines of
10 "You're not coming in here"
20 "Oh yes I :censored" am!"
30 "On No you're not!"
40 goto 20

Meanwhile everyone sits and watches the loop.

Whichever side you are on, just because you may or may not be a reasonable person does not mean the other side is even more unreasonable. One Kenneth Noye as prime example.

Pirate old bean, chill, it just ain't worth it. If it helps to calm yourself, remember that just as you think the Lexus driver is a jerk, so does every other single driver in the queue.

Only this last week I saw signs on a DC lane closure asking us to use both lanes up to the merge point. I have also seen signs asking drivers to merge in turn, and I think these are a good idea.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Ist good to zip merge. Ist way of keeping traffic flow und ist consideration. Have seen these signs more und more in roadworks up here in North.

But then - ist prerequisite of the North ....common sense

By the way pirate .... have never used the above word in any posts either spelled in German way or not. Am a ladylike feline Und not a laddylike one

A couple of years ago on the M1 (just after the first of the new Traffic Information signs were switched on) I was having a great run (for once) northbound at about 11pm and had just confirmed my home arrival time having passed the M6 junction when the signs lit up and advised that there were lane closures.

The queue was about 3 miles long (as it turned out) when I joined it and, when moving at, all trickling along in all three lanes. After about half a mile and 20 minutes the next info sign came into view with the message "Use hard shoulder" or something very close to that.

As soon as people could read it many dived for the hard shoulder. By the time we reached the next sign a mile later many of those who had ignored the first sign decided to take notice of the message still displayed there so leaving most of the 3 lanes empty.

There were a lot of artics, being night time, and I was amazed at the way so many people - a typical late night mix of traffic - tried to force their way onto the HS right in front of 36 tons of freight. Frightening.

Anyway, I stayed in lane 3 and simply trickled forward along (Auto creep speed) with a few others in lane 3 and a few people who eventually cleared the massed ranks heading for the HS and found lane 2 and much of 1 almost empty. Apart from any other reason lane 3 was much cleaner and fresher to sit in being away from the trucks and with southbound traffic keeping the air moving as it drove past.

Eventually, about 2 miles later, we came to the point where the problem ( a nasty looking accident in lane 2 ) had caused all 3 lanes to be coned off and we all calmly and sedately filtered from three lanes to two lanes and then one lane and then into the line on the HS. No problem.

But I did have a little chuckle at the thought of all the people who were so keen to follow the instructions on the signs - which presumably had been set to the same message all the way back to the M6 - desparately fighting their way into a slot on the HS and leaving 5 miles of 3 lane motorway almost completely empty.

yeah, i mostly drive in Germany and Holland, it works

can't say I've ever had a problem getting into place at the end, it's a matter of choosing your place carefully, and driving slowly near the end

Taking turns is the only way, getting in line early is all well in theory, but in the real world you have to go to the front then take turns. This is accepted.

I was talking about when one of our brothers wants to go to the front of a qoe, everyone else has been patiently waiting in.

Imagine you are in a que in the bank, then someone just walks past everyone and goes straight to the counter, or the supermarket...

That would be annoying, however if youre talking about the typical situation on the road your analogy is horribly wrong.

itd be more like

Imagine you are in a queue in the supermarket, then someone goes to the till next to you has no queue, pays, and leaves.

Good advice. There are plenty of people out there driving vehicles not registered to them, that regularly change hands. It's not worth getting into dispute with such people, the Kenneth Noye incident being a perfect example. It's not always easy to grit yer teeth and ignore it, but the very few occasions i've got into conflict with other drivers i've regretted it afterwards....

Best to just whack the air con up and put your mind elsewhere till the calm returns....

Wildy, why do I have this mental image of Sabine?

Remember the German lady who showed Jezza the way round the old 'Ring?

I think she will be making an appearance in the current series putting her right foot where her mouth was in "I can do that time in a van!"
