Channel Tunnel - UK side exit conflicting speed limits

Got back from France yesterday and noticed rather conflicting signs at the exit road from the channel tunnel towards the M20 which caused some confusion amongst the drivers.
On the right hand side, it has new signs (metal ones on the side of the road with fixed writing) stating "Variable speed limit 40", on the left hand side the normal "50" signs. Obvious result with some people hitting the anchors, others trying to drive around those that slowed to 40 (read 35) - just in case).
Anyone got any ideas what that is about and what is the limit there now?
