Anger as new AA road atlas shows speed cameras

The AA today defended its decision to mark the location of thousands of speed cameras on its new road atlas of Britain which is about to be published.
The motoring organisation said that its decision had the backing of the police, and was being done in the interests of road safety.
But the move was criticised by Transport 2000, an environmental campaign group, which said that indicating camera locations would help speeding motorists escape detection.
The new atlas shows the locations of 3,000 fixed speed cameras and around 3,000 mobile speedtrap spots.
Nicola Atkinson, an AA spokeswoman, said today: "We have done this because we believe people should know where the cameras are for safety reasons.
"Cameras are put in places where there have been four fatalities or serious injuries in three years and people should be aware of these accident blackspots."
She went on: "We are doing this with the backing of the police. We are not really doing anything new, as people can obtain information about camera sites from both the police and the Department for Transport."
But Steve Hounsham of Transport 2000 said: "This is irresponsible in the extreme.
"The only people interested in the location of speed cameras are those who like breaking speed limits but want to know when they need to put their foot on the brake to escape being caught.
"The AA is helping those motorists who want to break the law escape detection. This is like publishing the position of all police stations in a special atlas for car thieves."

just heard a rep from the AA on radio 4. Good job they have done it but the guy was a little too "pro" "safety" camera for my liking (he said they are not speed cameras but safety cameras)
Good effort though
It is illegal to speak the truth on Radio 4. They never publish any of my comments.
It was intersting that the AA was pro camera and the numpty from T2K was just plain anti car. I thought the way the AA guy got out of the speed limit question was very good. That would be 'BBC' radio 4 lol, so not much chance of a fair debate showing both sides of the story.
Sky news have covered the story all day, they've had interviews with T2000 and the ABD, the best was a live chat with Quentin Wilson, who turned it into a speed camera discussion stating very well that cameras dont work and accidents and fatalities aren't falling, police patrols are being replaced with cameras etc.
A pleasure to watch!

I think the AA line is great, it seems to me that they are turning the scamera logic back against the anti-speed lobby.
The logic that cameras mark accident black spots so surely it makes sense to ensure that motorists know where those blackspots are is virtually impossibly to fault!!
This leaves the scamera org's saying yes but then motorists will just slow down at cameras and speed up again the rest of the time. YES that's exactly what cameras cause that's exactly why they don't work - that's what we've all been telling you for ages!
Classic!

Why should the accident black spots not be made known, surely it is in the interest of safety? The chap on telly tonight from Transport2000 had a raw nerve showing over it, they preach road safety then condem an atempt to enhance it, for if my route shows several camaras I would pick a more safe route for my family trip. That right is it not camera co=ver black spots. but wait a minute if there is only 3000 black spots with cameras on why have they re-engineered the locations. anyway they chap from T2000 looked to me like he is one of "in bed by 10pm brigade" how he think he qualified to crit the AA baffles me...
So. If the police have approved of the AA's publication of the locations.
And the police put up their own Scamera signs too.
Why did they prosecute the old guy a while back for standing by the side of the road warning of a "saftey" camera?
Money grabbing cnuts the lot of them.
May their underpants become infested with the fleas of a thousand camels.

Is this right? I know of a few local cameras where there have never been any fatalaties.
Aunty Mary was on the Vine prog today..
She dug herself in deeper with each utterance... She told AA's Nicola that "speed cams are not a definition of a dangerous site (
jawohl - ist at fleece spot like we keep telling you :rolleyes) and that a lot of children have to die before a speed cam ist erected"
Tante Mary Liebchen
you teach children the Green Cross Code und you need to do much better than this as it ist a fact less children die in mainland Europe und that mainland Europe has less cameras than here.... perhaps ist because we foriegner know how to be parents und a significant chunk of UK parents are not as effective as they should be?
Or UK children are a bit thick compared to European ones? Something ist wrong as higherst road death rate, highest teen pregnancy rate, highest run off mit bloke from internet chatroom rate....but I suppose ist education all over again....
But ist better we know if we need to be careful... we drive on strange roads und are new to areas.... ist safer to be arware of problem?
But then .. if ist matter of revenue....
... ist not about safety...

Did she mistake anything Jezza said for death threats?
Vine was a bit naughty mit her at times und seemed to be on Nicola's side in the argument. Tante Mary was as silly as normal und claimed hiding cameras made drivers stick to speed limit for some reason. Woman lost a lot of creidbility if the comments were anything to go by...und people talked about need for training und BiB und someone praised Durham und North Yorks...und held themup as classic examples of safety on road without scamerati....

Have your say on the issue: www.sky.com/skynews/home
presently, in favour of AA map - 82% and: 18% against
Come on all we can do detter than that! vote now, look for the "vote" box on the first page.
