Anyone know what happens in this case from a guy at work today.

He was behind a car that stopped after seeming to go at a junction that was clear, he bumps the car in front fairly hard and the hit car just drove off.

Watching the dash cam, footage the car never shows brake lights ever even when slowing to a stop?

Car seems to be MOT/TAX and on MID, do you think they have taken his reg and driven off?

Maybe the other driver had had a drink & wanted to get away?

Seems weird both bumpers damaged in the bump appears not metal damaged and his insurers don't seem fussed about the car that took off. He didn't realise no brake lights until he watched the dash cam back.

I guess the brake light thing is a red herring. If you hit a car in front you've hit a car in front!

Weird how they go when its clear then stop, no brake lights up, makes me wonder if they don't like the road side attention so do crash for cash from home.

He didn't have the full reg when he called, is it in his gift now to send the footage and the reg or should he just leave it?

His insurers said he didn't need to advise the police or anything, they are getting his car repaired.

If it were me I'd not over think it & crack on with the above. As the insurers are involved let them deal with any future fall out. (I'll bet there's none)

As there were no injuries I doubt the police will be interested and he didn't leave the scene. The other party did leave the scene without stopping, I personally would report it being the at fault party in case the other party comes forward but YMMV.

you would report to police?

Insurers knew within a couple of hours all be partial reg and vehicle description, maybe the bumped car knew their brake lights were mashed cars seems to be 3 up, defo didn't hang around after stopping bizarely.

Or will come back with some rubbish about being afraid, but are now all suffering from pains in the neck.

My leaf when you use e-pedal mode appears to brake/slow quite aggressively when you lift off without illuminating the brake lights.

I only see the brake lights when I brake or the car gets carried away and ‘thinks’ it’s about to pile into the vehicle in front and stands itself on its nose!

No doubt with a full car too, all suffering, cannot work for 6 months, can’t afford to feed their kids, suffering PTSD from the crash... how longs a piece of string.

Last I checked it was a legal requirement to inform the police if a crash results in damage and details aren't exchanged at the scene! (technically within 24 hours...) Can probably now be done via 101 or an online form now...

The other driver drove off, but I seriously doubt that removes the obligation to provide details. The police won't do anything beyond recording the details in case the other driver later comes forward for a low speed bump, but they should still be taking the details...

The insurer should be told off for advising not to report to police... They should know the rules on this...

Smells of crash for cash as its common to disconnect the brake lights.

The driving off is a odd one. Maybe its to avoid confrontation at the scene and hence avoid police involvement? Its common in crash for cash where the victim realises to call the police and the hassle that can cause for the criminals. If they drive off the whole police side is removed and its just an insurance claim which is harder to prove as crash for cash.

Or uninsured. Just because the car shows as having insurance on MID, doesn't mean the person behind the wheel did.

Report the incident using 101. Why? The other car left the scene so arse covering against future possible recriminations. Bearing in mind though, that there would likely be some liability on the mate in work as he hit the car in front. Insurance advice re not reporting it could backfire on them if it turns out to be a crash for cash scam. Keep the footage as evidence. They might end up having to do a fraud investigation.
I have just got home and on one stretch of road encountered a similar situation but a couple of differences. No collision. Car in front had one brake light and we were stopped in a queue at lights. Car in front did not move off, possibly stalled. Lights changed so we had to stop again. Lights changed to green but similar scenario....delayed move. My thoughts? Hold back and be patient.
Driver error/competence/ not familiar with the car/ learner but no L plate, car looked a bit scruffy so poorly maintained and engine cutting out/ driver and passenger busy gossiping?
