ANPR Question

A friend of mine has a car remarkably similar to my own, and it recently failed its MOT due to rear shock leaking.

He has ordered new shocks from the USA (import car) but it wont be here until Thursday this week, which is his first day back on shift (4 on, 4 off) meaning his next free day after the shock arrives will be 3/11/20.

The fitting of the shocks will need to be done at his dads for access and tools.

If my friend was to drive for 1.5 hours to his dads and back with no valid MOT, what are the chances he would be caught?

Is there a grace period for no MOT?

Well, a guy at work drove around for 3 months not realising he had no tax. Nothing came of it. Thats the sort of thing i was hoping to hear.

If the general consensus is its a low risk of getting caught, my friend would probably go for it.

For a reasonable price, yes.

Plus, they were ordered thursday of this week, so 5 working days would be good service even within the UK.

A legal way would be to book a retest at a garage who also fit the shocks before doing the MOT.

Bit off topic but have you figured customs/payment into that 5 days?

In my friend's experience it is certainly possible to drive for an hour and a half without being pinged by ANPR. He tells me he once drove for five weeks after the MOT on one of his cars expired when he confused the renewal date with that of another of his cars.

No, 5 working days would be poor service in the UK and it'll be a miracle if they arrive from the US in 5 working days.

Yeh. RockAuto in the USA. They calculate shipping to include customs, ive used them before

Last time i used them, i ordered on the Sunday and it was here on the Thursday. Couldnt believe it either.

All 3. He can avoid motorway if thats the most likely way to get ANPR'd. The journey is Southampton to Yeovil.

As long as tax and insurance were in place, driving an otherwise roadworthy vehicle between Southampton and Yeovil without an MOT wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

But that's just me.

Unfortunately it's very hard to answer a question like that. However if you phone up all the police stations between Southampton and Yeovil and ask them the question, they should be able to give you a much more reliable answer.

Many police and highways agencies cars have a ANPR cameras fitted now, so the road type is irrelevant. You are either lucky, or unlucky.

That said, my wife drove 7 months without MOT and two months without insurance and tax. Totally oblivious. Idiot. Expensive car on finance too so if she had smashed it we would have been stuffed.

If you see a VOSPA survey vehicle (often see then on A34 laybyes) you will get a letter on the post.

So if it drove past you and your ANPR pinged up no MOT, you'd just ignore it?

Personally speaking, I'd be far more concerned about a car being driven on the public roads with no MOT, than no tax - But that's just me.

So if it drove past you and your ANPR pinged up no MOT, you'd just ignore it?

It would have to be a very quiet day if I was spurred into action because a recently expired MOT caused the ANPR to trigger.

If I was out there fishing, I'd be hoping to catch something a little bigger.

Is that because you believe a current MOT certificate guarantees a vehicle's roadworthiness ?

Hopefully no one will crash into you or vice versa whilst not 100% legal. Could cause a few awkward questions to come your way including from your insurance company. Is it really worth it. Just get a lift from a mate.
