C1 entitlement

Coming up to 70 years old in January, so I've had my renewal notice come through. If I want to keep the C1 entitlement I have to apply differently with medical certificates etc. It's not a critically important thing for me (although there has been occasions where I've had to drive vehicles thet would be included).so I'm leaving it off. All OK so far - however when my new licence comes through (without the C1) I'm supposed to return my old old licence (with the C1) Typically I've been asked to do a job in early January (before my birthday) involvig a large commercial vehicle. Would I still be covered on C1 before my birthday even though the licence does not show it ?

I would check with DVLA to be sure but your entitlement expiry date should be written on the license. Not sure if not renewing the medical means it drops off the date they get the paperwork or if your entitlement continues until the due date. Logic would suggest your entitlement would still be valid until that date but often logic and dvla don't go together.

Or you could just delay sending off for the new license until after the job? Even if your license expires shortly thereafter, just send it recorded delivery before said date and you should be fine.

Yes - Done online - Altthough if you need the C1 it has to be a separate (paper) application Good point about the expiry date

You will find somewhere on the DVLA site a statement that all licences for renewal, of those reaching 70 years old, have been extended for 12 months.
As said elsewhere to retain C1-D1 you have to have your doctor verify your health for this, and confirmed every 12 months, including eyesight. I have not had my notification yet but have already started the ball rolling, recently had eyes tested, after cataract ops done, all good there and chatting with my doctor tomorrow for the fitness requirements.

You need the D4 (medical examination) and D2 (application for lorry/bus/mini-bus) forms/reports to be done by post, either from post office or from DVLA otherwise the renewal at 70 on-line loses the two categories.

Pre 97 C1 is valid until your 70th birthday

For the record, my new licenced received today (well done DVLA) Without a C1 or D1 classification on it! I'm sure my old licence ued to have expiry dates on it (If only I could find it)
