Current rules on number plates?

Has there been a change in the way in which number plates have to be displayed on a vehicle? I see more and more of the type which have the characters raised from the plate itself, sometimes quite significantly. Is this legal as I thought that the only legal types were the normal flat type of plate?
Also, with regards displaying them. I'm seeing more where the plate at the front is off-set to one side or another so as not to obscure the grille. These are very often much smaller than usual with correspondingly tiny characters - I'm guessing that this isn't legal?
Also has the law changed whereby if you have a s
tty old Corsa you are allowed to remove the front plate and crudely jam it up inside the windscreen to demonstrate what an utter tt you are?

Off-set was not previously allowed, but there was an amendment to the Regs which allowed for it (may have been linked to he Alfa 156 and -ironically- alignment with the rest of Europe?)
Smaller characters only allowed for where the manufacturers location is too small for a full-sized plate (ie US/Japanese import) but still must comply with min size regs

Display in the windscreen is not allowed, and costing Big Racers £100 a pop, so it will depend on the local Police interest in enforcing rather than anything national.

When I am King, the historically illiterate fool at who allowed cars aged 40 plus to have black and silver plates WILL be killed. Such plates on a car made post 1972 look daft.

I think this must be the first time I disagree with something you've written. I think those black and silver plates look brilliant. They make any car they are fitted to look far better than they do with the black and yellow eye-sores that we have now, and they're just as legible. There has not been a restriction on offset plates for at least 50 years and I suspect there never has been. The was certainly no change linked to the Alfa156 or EU alignment. Cat
