No parking signs on roads

Was picking some thing up from an industrial estate today but could not find the address, pulled up on the road to phone for directions. Some guy passing tapped on my window and told me I was not allowed to park on the road, pointed to a white sign that said no parking in this industrial estate at any time! Is this enforceable?

If it is private then they may try. I know somewhere which has signs which state: 'do not stop, if you stop you will be fined £100' or similar. Impossible to enforce at that level, but you regularly see a camera car prowling with a driver who would terrify mothers if he stopped near to a playground...

Your local Highway Authority (County Council, probably) should have online Highway Records you can search to see if it is a private road.

A row of setts or a change in surface as you enter the estate might also indicate the extent/limit of the Public Highway.

Seems odd. How would customers of the businesses there park?
Who was this man who pointed out the sign?
Did you ask him if he knew where your destination unit was?

The Intention will be to stop people parking in the estate all day making it hard/impossible for hgvs to deliver and collect.

Without knowing where it was we can't really comment. However on most industrial estates the roadways are privately owned an therefore the owner can make up their own parking rules, however enforcing them is a different issue. They can of course use CCTV to enforce it, so the person talking to you may have been doing you a favour.

Go to some industrial estates and you can see why enforcing of parking restrictions is a good idea. Many years ago I managed an industrial estate where parking was a significant problem with commuters parking all over the place and the entrance. One day an artic was making a delivery to a unit and couldn't get in. Well not until it forced its way in damaging numerous cars in the process. Strangely when I contacted the tenants to ask if anyone knew anything about the incident no one did! However the parking issue was resolved for a while!

Whereas I have, making you look foolish. Not an industrial estate either, in a blue collar sense, and without an obvious transition from publicly kept to privately owned.

I live off a private road within a deer park and we often have cars parked on the access road (photographers wanting to take pictures especially Bronco the huge stag) . Our groundsman using his 4x4 Massey just hooks them up, drags them away and dumps them off in the field at the top of the lane. The road has clear 'No Parking' signs but still idiots ignore it.
One case of court action involving a fked gearbox in a Range Rover which was dragged with the gearbox in park was thrown out. As the signs are very clear the groundsman just carries on..
