Can you claim for damage to the content of a parcel sent through the Post Office, but as the receiver? I’ve checked their web site, but can’t get very far as there was no tracking.

Item was clothing bought off E bay and sent as a small parcel second class. Not expensive, just inside £20, but now not useable (small tear in the fabric), it arrived in ripped packaging inside a bag from the PO saying “sincere apologies” and how to get in touch, but as already stated above, can’t get past the “include tracking” part. Been in touch with the E bay seller and 100% sure it has nothing to do with them, other than maybe they could of wrapped it better. Will be ringing tomorrow, but not sure what to expect as it was a used E bay item of not much value, but certainly worth pursuing.

No. The contract to deliver was between the seller & Royal Mail, your claim is with the seller for damaged goods.

There is no contract between you and the Post Office as you didn’t pay for the service. The seller did. You’d have to chase them to put in a claim against the Post Office. The success of such a claim wouldn’t be guaranteed either.

You don't have to chase anyone, go to purchase history on the left of your home screen then go to more actions on the drop box next to the item you purchased, now click item not as described and start the return procedure giving the reason that it's damaged, you won't have to pay for the return postage.
Any damage that happens before you receive the item isn't your problem.

Bugger, I left positive feedback as I knew it was nothing to do with the seller. I’ve messaged her and she’s been very helpfulfrown I suppose she should be able to get the money back from the PO as there’s compensation up to £20 for small parcel second class and I have all the photos to show the issues.

feedback makes no difference, just raise case it was damaged a and return let her sort it out.

Contact the seller, tell her you are going to raise a return. She may just refund you as it is a small amount.

RM website suggests either sender or recipient can claim...

RoyalMailwebsite said:
The sender or the recipient may both claim for a damaged item but only one will be paid compensation. If both claim for the same item then Royal Mail will process only the sender’s claim unless compensation has already been paid to the recipient. The claimant is required to provide the same evidence regardless of whether they are the sender or recipient

As above, as long as you're still within the time limit.

As an Ebay seller - anyone mentions damage I just immediately prepare for the refund.
I will usually ask for a picture, just for my own sanity, but even if they don't provide one, it's just not worth the hassle - Ebay will side with the buyer each time.

If it's a small thing I'll take the hit - sent a Steel Case for a PS4 game and that got dented in the post. I just refunded and told them to keep it, paying for the return postage as well seemed a waste of time.
Larger items, so long as I did pay for enough insurance, I'll get it back and claim - takes it's time, but I've always had my claim paid from RM and all couriers I've used.

As a buyer, I'd just send one final message saying "This is damaged and I'm going to start a return" - you'll have a refund sooner rather than later, even if you are forced to wait for Ebay to act.

I agree, but tried and as it doesn’t have a tracking number that’s as far as you can get, other than ringing them. So I tried that and it was a 30 minute waiting times, that was after spending nearly 5 min getting through their automated system. I feel sorry for the seller, but will heed advice and contact her, thanks for assistance.

If a big shop or Internet company sent you a package and it was damaged on arrival would you mess about trying to sort it with royal mail?

Did as advised and refund already sorted. Seller has also lodged a claim against post office using all my photos, so hopefully a good result for us both. Thanks to all for the assistance.
