I'm considering buying a stolen and recovered almost new van. 18 months old, 15k miles. If the service book is up to date, what's likely to happen regarding the 3 year manufacturers warranty? Is there any legal reason why I shouldn't expect it to be honoured?

Ironic really, as I used to be in warranty admin a long time ago, but it never actually came up back then, and I imagine things are a lot more stringent now.

How would the garage know it’s a write off unless it routinely HPIs customer cars? Cars get written off for all sorts of reasons, doesn’t invalidate warranty.

Instinctively that's what I think, but the dealer network is a mysterious place these days.

Absolutely zero idea what you’re trying to say here

If the car has been repaired to a good standard then the garage wouldn’t know and even if they did what are the terms of the warranty?

I'm struggling to see what point your making here in relation to my op.

I know of a jag that was written off (recorded as such) repaired and then got a new engine under warranty,

Like wise a Ferrari 456 that had a few recalls and some warranty work done.

And more recently a BMW that is going in to have the wheels refurbed under warranty, also on the hit list.

So I doubt very much the main dealers even check the history of the stuff they work on.

You're assuming the van I was looking at has had anything done. It hasn't. It has 3 marks on it and a damaged wheel rim. It was stolen with the keys. It was only a claim because it was paid out on before it turned up. It's academic now, I watched it sell for more than I was prepared to give, but I could have driven it home, bought a second key, an alloy and had a dent guy do the very minor repairs. There was nothing visible to say it hadn't just been bought and owned by a careless owner.

If the wiring loom is “wrong” the vehicle won’t work. Are non-OEM wiring looms even a thing? I very much doubt your typical dealer is going to know something is obviously wrong, and if it was obviously wrong I’d expect the customer to know anyway.

Cars get seriously smashed up all the time and it doesn’t stop them getting warranty repairs.

If they spot overspray etc they’ll probably think their own bodyshop did some work on it.

As it’s now academic do you still want to know.

It might make losing the opportunity worse.

I'm still looking at various things on copart and ebay, I might do something or nothing, it's not a critical situation. The only reason for the thread was that I came across a 2019 vehicle which is a couple of years newer than the ones I was looking at. In reality, if the price had been right I'd have bought it regardless of the warranty position. No harm in trying to find out as much as possible in advance though.

Found this online, it would suggest that a vehicle being written off, will invalidate the warranty.

Like any contract, it is important to know what circumstances can void all or part of your warranty. These could include;

Salvage title - if your car was in a severe accident and was given a salvage title or declared a total loss, your entire warranty is voided.
Misuse of the vehicle - including racing/competition of any type, overloading the vehicle or off-roading.
Environmental damage - if your vehicle was damaged in a fire, flood, earthquake or any other environmental disaster.
Altered odometer/mileometer - if your vehicle's odometer has been disconnected, tampered with or replaced, the dealer cannot determine the exact mileage.
Neglect - for example; going years without putting oil in your vehicle. Regular servicing and health checks are important to pick up on repairs or fluids needed.
Use of improper fluids - for example, damage caused by putting diesel into a petrol engine wouldn't be covered under warranty. Check your owner's manual for correct fluids required.
Modifications - there is a lot of 'grey area' in this aspect of warranty coverage, so be sure to check your owner's manual.
