Mystery Boxes : what are they?

Near where I live, on one of the main roads, two mysterious boxes have been fixed to two lamp-posts, on different sides of the road, about 100 yards inbetween them. They are small (probably 8 inches square, 5 inches deep) and light-grey with what looks like a lock on the front, mounted about 10-12 feet up the lamp posts.

My first thought was the usual traffic monitoring boxes but nothing seems to be connected to them (wires on the road etc). There has been some police/scamera activity on the road of late - I pressumed a connection.

All very strange. Anyone know?

That's worrying. They might be bombs, I should cut the chains and take them away and bury them. Just in case

Are there any sensors in the roads (in the tarmac)?

Do they have the letters "RSPB" stencilled on them ?

We have these near to where I live. The poles will get a digial sign that indicates either your current speed, or the fact you are breaking the limit.

They normally move the actual "display" bit around and hence poles with just the grey box on it.
